Buffalo Flats
A friend of mine, originally from Buffalo, needed to find a new place to live. She's in NYC, works in publishing, isn't on much a year and had to find a flat she could share with a roommate for $1300/month.
Her options:
Red Hook, Brooklyn: The part near the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Red Hook is an emerging area but has no subway and, while much of the neighborhood is on the rise, the area my friend could afford is on the cusp of being on the cusp of gentrification.
Harlem: Not Harlem Deluxe near Columbia University and the 125th St. subway station--the Harlem within walking distance of Riverside Church, St. John The Divine Cathedral and Grant's Tomb. That Harlem has already gentrified. The Harlem my friend could swing is 20 long blocks deeper into Harlem than the Apollo Theater and over 100 blocks from where she works.
Which did she chose?
Neither. She's establishing contacts and will freelance from Buffalo. She moves back at the end of the summer.
Here are eight reasons why. View Image #1 View Image #2 View Image #3 View Image #4 View Image #5 View Image #6 View Image #7 View Image #8

On Labor Day, September 1st, the second annual “Run Into Buffalo” 5K road race will be held in the City of Buffalo. The race starts at Niagara Square in downtown Buffalo at 9 AM on Labor Day. In addition to the race itself, there’ll be a pre- …
As long as I can remember, the western corner of Elmwood and Anderson has been poorly maintained. That's too bad, because while the rest of the small businesses on the street fight to maintain a distinctive neighborhood image, the Verizon and National Grid buildings remain unkempt. The funny thing is that the potential for that corner is there. If you look closely at the Verizon building details, you will see that the materials and craftsmanship are quite impressive. Can you imagi …
Construction cranes could soon be dotting the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus under expansion plans presented to the Buffalo Planning Board this morning. Kaleida Health has teamed with Ciminelli Development on the ambitious plan which involves three new buildings and $200 million in new investment. If the University of Buffalo agrees to move portions of their medical school to one of the new campus buildings, total investment could exceed $300 million.
A BR reader asks: Is it cheaper to film a movie in Montreal than it is in Buffalo? The Factory, a movie coming out in 2009 reads the following on John Cusack's IMDB page:
An obsessed cop is, with his partner, on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, N.Y. but when his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any professional restraint to get the killer.
And someone from Montreal made the following comment:
Last week The Factory was filming in Montreal n …

While NYC has the glam associated with Madonna, Woody Allen and Sex in the City, if you can't afford a fabulous way of life n dinners, plays, trips is it really worth it? Did you really gain anything? How do you justify such an expensive life without the benefits of an exotic life-STYLE?
Hats off to your friend! I think she will find her life much more fulfilling and less crazy than the Big Apple.
