Buffalo Conundrum 1981

Story Options

Hello, first post here. While camping in Allegany State Park, I met Bob Schmid, who authored a book on the history of the Park. He jarred my memory of a book, "Buffalo Conundrum 1981" written that year by a Walter Yates Jones, a book of puzzles, riddles and clues leading to five caches of gold he hid around Western New York. I found a copy of it online this week, and starting doing the puzzles myself. Jones wrote it to promote all of what's good about WNY, and get people out to see it. From what I've learned, only one cache was found, he retrieved the other four (problems with people overrunning certain areas, a rumor about a rattlesnake, etc.), and moved out of the area at some point. I'm curious to know if anyone knows his whereabouts if he's alive, or his family, I'd like to know if the exact locations were ever revealed, and/or if the locations can still be figured out from the book 25 years later (I suspect not; from what I can figure, one location, in Allegany State Park, used clues concerning structures long ago torn down). At any rate, my love of Allegany, and the new adventures I can now take there with Schmid's book and the puzzle location, have ignited my interest. Anyone? -Don in WNY from post on Buffalo Boosters.

Yes I remember Buffalo Conundrum 1981 I had two copies of the book and had a great time with my family back in 1981 searching for the gold. If you want more information I would suggest contacting the publisher Brian Fahey I contacted him once about 10 years ago and at that time he advised me that one burried gold site was still undiscovered. I would love for a news station to revisit this story and let all of us who bought the book learn what actually happened to the gold.
