Buffalo Brewfest @ The Arena

Moving Brewfest from its former home at the Central Terminal has a lot of people talking. It was quite a change from previous years. And with any and all changes, there were some beer lovers (that we talked to at the event) who wanted to share their thoughts. A few of them said that identifying the lines that led to the brewer was difficult. Looking down at the crowd from above, I can pretty much say that there were no lines. Also, some of the brewers over-poured, which meant that they ran out of beer early. The lines did move quickly however - even though we had no idea what was going to be waiting for us at the end, we enjoyed much of what we tasted.
I have to give credit to the guys in the photo above who took it upon themselves to make pretzel necklaces for themselves. They said that the idea came from other brew festivals that they had attended. A large pretzel was tied on either end, and smaller pretzels filled in along the rope. In-between beer tastings they would break off a pretzel to cleanse the taste buds in preparation for the next beer... brilliant!
I think that it would be cool to see the Harbour Club opened up next year for Brewfest. That would certainly open up the venue, while giving people a chance to sit down and enjoy some food along with the brews. It's nice to know that the Metro Rail is right there too - that means that you can really enjoy the event and not have to worry about driving home afterwards. Until next year... cheers!

A lot of people have done it. Maybe you've even tried it once or twice. You had one too many and instead of calling someone – a friend, your mom, your roommate – you got in the car and you drove home. You made it alive and without an arrest on your record and you swore it’d never happen again. But since you made it once, you know you’ll be tempted to try it again, except next time, maybe you won’t get so lucky.
It’s hard to make the right decision, especially if it in …

What a continuing success....
Hold it next year at the nice new convention center or at the new downtown "ralph." Woooohhhh.... Sorry, dreaming - just woke up.
Looked like a packed house - though I love craft beers, I did not go. Decided to do things outdoors. Maybe incorporate the outdoors and the Central Wharf next year, or year after. Just thoughts....

Over crowded (and I can handle crowds), super warm in the atrium, not enough room to wander outside, waited in line for 15 minutes (no exaggeration) for one sample and the decided I'd had enough and left. If the money wasn't going to a good cause (Buffalo Speech and Hearing, correct?) I would have felt as though I COMPLETELY wasted $20. I really don't remember it being that crowded in the terminal. There was no point in moving it, as far as I am concerned. I was not a happy camper at all. Move it back to the terminal and set up more outdoor tents to accommodate brewers to maximize use of the space there. Sure, the tents might cost some cash, but since it's for charity, can't someone work on getting the tents donated or at least at a reduced cost?

I thought overall the event went really well. Moving to a new venue will create inherit problems right off the bat, but I'm pretty confident that the organizers will address any and all issues that came up such as spacing and layout. In talking to some of the people running the event I guess they couldn't move it outside because the State wouldn't give them a license in time or something...but that would be great for next year. With utilizing the harbor club or even the upper ring of HSBC spacing shouldn't be a problem. What creates the real havoc is you get people that get there beer and just talk at the taps. I'm all for filling up to the brim, but get out of the way and let the other 20 people waiting for a brew get going. The article on the event in the Buffalo News totally sucked though. A failed attempt at what looked like a few written lines blasted the event from "The" to the final period. Typical Buffalo News though, they'd rather choose to write about what's horrible with Buffalo than anything progressive. So much props to BR on giving a fair write up. I know I'll be back next year though. Last year everyone said the problems was with the token policy, but at the end of the day that worked out fine as people can't get rid of them by the the time 6 o'clock rolls around. Just another one of several dozen festivals that go off the radar in Buffalo over the summer. Get out and enjoy them all. Job well done and best of luck for more sucess next year.

Any idea where to send suggestions/complaints? The only contact address on the website is for someone from the Buffalo Speech and Hearing Center. And I'm sure she's not responsible for the debacle.
Let me preface this by saying I did have a good time, but so much of what happened at the Brewfest this year was truly frustrating.
The most pertinent and problematic is that you could no longer use your tokens on food. This means that if you didn't want to drink 20 samples of beer, you were out of luck. The only food offered was the overpriced selections from the HSBC Snack Bars, for which you had to pay cash. I think that this forces people into making the decision of either overindulging in beer, or feeling that their admission money went to waste. Being able to use tokens for something besides beer is essential.
Beyond that, they obviously needed to spread out the beer more. If half the brewers were set up on the concourse upstairs there would have been no overcrowding problem. Sticking them all so close to one another on the same level created that absurd traffic jam. The reasons for moving to the Arena were to give the festival "more room" to grow. Yet it was far more crowded and difficult to navigate than the Terminal was. Even though bathroom lines moved quickly, we all questioned why they couldn't have opened the gates and allowed access to one additional bathroom. The arena has the facilities to accommodate more, but didn't make use of them.
An issue they still haven't resolved is that people who buy their tickets ahead of time have a longer wait than those that show up to buy tickets at the door. This was the same last year. The lines of ticket holders stretch well across the plaza, while people showing up to buy tickets waltz in past the huge crowds.
Lastly, I am disappointed in some of the brewers. I think that these festivals are a great opportunity to bring people new and different beers. Other than a few notable exceptions, many brewers were pouring their most common, uninteresting beers (Ithaca and Southern Tier I'm looking at you).
I think that the Arena can be a good venue for the event, if they learn from the mistakes of this year. They had tons of space that wasn't being utilized, and a concentration of activities that ensured traffic jams and discomfort. Heck, they have draft beer set ups all over the second floor, different breweries could set up at different snack bars across the Arena and connect their kegs to the draft systems that already exist there.

I totally agree with JAramini!!!! I add 8 tokens left and too bad that it couldn't be spent on food. A waste of $20. Also, they could have spread the event around the main floor. Next time there should be more beer vendors. It seems that last years event had more vendors. I was totally disappointed.

The event was overly crowded and difficult to navigate. If they had made better use of the space and spread the tables out it would have been much easier to find a line and get away from the table after you got your sample. The organizers have not done a very good job, IMO, for the past several years.

Last year the information packet they gave you also included a map to where each brewery was set up as well as information on what each brewery was offering. It wasn't always 100% accurate, but it was far more useful than the packet of advertisements that they handed out yesterday.

It was not worse of a crowd as at Central Terminal but the lack of good food was annoying. I always look forward to a good sausage or something but Arena food that you can't use the tokens for was annoying.
If they distributed the beer upstairs and gave people more room down it would have distributed the flow better. They need to bring in the good beer food though. The arena food was LAME.
The good thing about this event was the access to public transit.. beside that I utterly miss the Central Terminal. I would give is a C compared to the past few years which I think were A's.

I also agree that the lack of a list of beers was really annoying. Half the fun is to try one, rate it, write it down and try another. There wasn't an easy way to do it this time.

VERY POORLY RUN. Line was over 200 deep at 2:00 pm to get in the arena.. All were left to bake in the sun and humid remps for 1/2 an hour to get in. Over crowded and lines were a joke to get a whole 2 ounces of beer. WHY DID THEY NOT USE THE 2ND LEVEL? The ONLY good thing was the BEER.

I had a blast...i paid 20 bucks...sampled a ton of beer and hung out w/ my friends. The lines were not as long people are making it sound...people are just being dramatic...yes it would be nice to see it more spread out or in a larger venue next year but stop making a big deal about the lines. If you stood in the back and expected to be ushered to the front of the line it wasnt going to happen. But if you moved your feet toward the front...i never waited more than 5-7 mins for a beer

I didn't go to this, but a lot of people I know did, and they all basically thought it was a waste of time and money. It's freaking August, cant' they set this up outside? Maybe have it at Dunn Tire Park like the Wing Fest.

I am sad to read the complaints about this worthwhile event. The event is not about the quality of the beer but the service to the Speech and Hearing Center. I wish the white majority in the crowd would take a moment to think about where their money is going. This type of event should not be a cheap substitute for happy hour, but a charitable event for a worthwhile organization.
I hope that the drunks and punks in the photo above take a moment to think about the people who are truly in need, instead of just thinking about their 'need' for a cheap high.

Let me start by saying I love buffalo, beer, and the past 5 buffalo brewfests. Yesterdays brewfest at hsbc was simply.... DEPLORABLE! It was claustrophobic, overcrowded, and simply put, not fun. I've never whined before about crowded venues but this was absolutely ridiculous, really, waiting 15 minutes for a single sample! After two hours the crowded mash/atrium pit I think got worse. We finally left halfway through (not too mention being so embarrassed having friends come in from out of town) and went to pearl street for some badly needed oxygen. Maybe this was the wake up call for me to check out a brewfest somewhere else. Typical buffalo, great idea, terrible execution.

quijibo, i think your missing the point. i'm disappointed with the organizers (and it's obvious you were not at the firetrap/brewfest) not the charity. I hope the brewfest raised alot of money for the speech and hearing center and the whales were saved.

I totally agree. I've been to some kick-ass beer fests in the past (Tap-NY anyone?) and never had to deal with the lines and confusion I dealt with at this festival. You were lucky if you even knew what line you were in.
Rhe advertising/website was a bit mis-leading too. They listed restaurants, (Cozumel, Steel Drums, Ulrich's to name a few) that weren't there. They also made it look like the *actual* breweries were participating. Ommegang is listed, but they weren't even there!. Their Rare Vos was being poured by a third-party who was pouring three other beers. WTF??
And I like Sam Adams, but being poured at a beer fest out of bottles?? By someone that doesn't even know what beer is?!?
I'll think twice before I commit to this next year...

Quijibo, you're saying that it doesn't matter that this event was poorly executed in comparison to past years because the proceeds went to charity? A well-executed event makes people want to return and spend money to go towards the cause. Were the upstairs snack bar proceeds given to BSHC as well? If not, that's a change this year that hurts the potential fund-raising opportunity.
And a Brewfest like this is NOT all about getting drunk, it's about sampling unique beers.
If the BSHC was throwing an ice cream social that was this poorly thought-out, people would be doing the same type of complaining.

I for one would love for this to succeed but the venue was terrible-crowded, no map of brewers, poor food choices and some brewers listed where not even there. I'm small and all I got was elbows and backs. Being a homebrewer, I want to see micro brews, talk to the brewers themselves and enjoy being with people who want to contribute to good local beer. Honestly, I have a better time just going to the Elmwood Beer Merchant, sampling the growler choices and truly talking about beer. I completely agree with JAramini and crc. It really was a sloppy event.

for those who only went to this years event let me say that the past events were much better. In years past the brewers... or at least their own reps were there to pour the beers and had tons to say about it. You could ask questions try one and get another sample of a different type from them. This year it looked like BHSC staff did the pouring which really dropped the ball on a big part of the event. Don't get me wrong I still had a lot of fun.. just more fun in years past. Indoors wasn't the problem and getting into the event wasn't so bad either. Just a really poor layout and horrid food options for a beer tasting. No one wants bad pizza and nachos while trying to sample beer.

I was also incredibly disappointed by this event. We attended last year at the Central Terminal and had a great time, and I thought the move to HSBC would be a good one (easier access with MetroRail). Instead, it was a disaster. I was hardly concerned with my inability to get a "cheap high" or attend a "cheap substitute for happy hour". On the contrary, we were there TO support BHSC and sample beers along the way. But that was really challenging. It was so overcrowded, we could barely navigate through the crowd.
Also, I was concerned about the safety - it did seem like a firetrap, as munro78 points out. I don't know if other people realized this, but the doors running the length of the building were locked! The only unlocked entrance/exit were the doors at the north and south ends of the atruim!! Anyone who was there would recognize that, in case of an emergency or moment of panic, there would be some serious issues evacuating that place, as it was virutally impossible to move. I understand why they couldn't have people exiting through those doors, but I would have thought they'd at least have them open and guarded by security...
Anyhow, I hope BHSC will seriously reconsider location and/or organization of this event.

I thought the move to HSBC would be good... a great location, fun building, and A/C (unlike last year). But the setup truly disappointed me. I arrived at 3:00 p.m. and still had tokens left at the end... and unfortunately had to go to the same crappy vendors because the good ones were gone by 5:00 p.m.
Don't get me wrong--I love the event and would go again. But next year, if they plan to have this again at the arena, the "other" vendors (like raffle people, etc.) need to go upstairs. There should be a sectioned-off area outside for food... preferably GRILLED food! I also think the dividers like you see at airport security check-ins could keep the lines in order. People really got pushy, and others cut in lines.
I will say this, though... even though for the second year in a row I had leftover tokens, I felt like I drank my 60 ounces. Many vendors give you a lot more than 3 ounces. And while I didn't stop at Saranac, they were filling the mugs COMPLETELY!

they should move it outside. chippewa from main to delaware. they even could set up the vendors in bars or just have them on the street, or the inner harbor, or lasalle park or erie basin marina, or close down lincoln behind the albright knox, or anywhere. just not inside. (and use the tokens for food!)
