The 'Buffalo 101' Event

Now we're talking... this Sunday (2pm-5pm), 250 incoming Medaille freshman are going to be heading down to the Commercial Slip. It's a joint effort between Medaille College and the Buffalo Tours program. Hopefully this trip will be just one of the many waterfront excursions that these students take during their time spent at the college. Not only will the students learn about the waterfront and the surrounding architecture, they will also be shown where they can catch the Metro Rail and how to take full advantage of the public transportation options.
This is one of the most important acclimation processes devised by the WNY Service Learning Coalition. After the students become familiar with their surroundings, they will be introduced to groups and organizations that can help to provide the students with an even stronger connection to Buffalo. The ultimate goal for all those involved with this unique program is the retention of the students after graduation. For far too long we have assumed that Buffalo students would simply make the Buffalo connection on their own.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

This is good news for the showcasing of our hidden gem, especially for freshman at a local college. Much better than takin a trip to the Galleria in which most probably already know about.

This is wonderful but Id like to throw in a comment that is just alittle off topic if everyone doesnt mind.
Has anyone visited Rochester Institute of Technology and their NTID school for the deaf? I was just thinking how wonderful it would be for a local Buffalo college/university to learn from Rochesters NTID and perhaps team together with St Marys School for the Deaf.
St. Marys School for the Deaf is very close to Canisius, Medaille and Buffalo State.
Anyway to all those starting classes and visiting Buffalo; good luck and there are things you will like about Buffalo, love about Buffalo and frustrate the crap out of you but thats just part and parcel of joining our community.

Medaille is clearly just following the lead of Buff State here [insert sarcastic tone]. Maybe this should balloon into a competition btwn local colleges & univerisities to see who can get more students on downtown "tours" / group excursions during the first semester. Most students discover that there's a vibrant city here on their own, but how much more would their enjoy their time here if they found that out sooner, and if their sphere of awareness included something more than the Chip strip to start?
