Brush Up Buffalo's West Side

This June, hundreds of volunteers from across the city will grab their paintbrushes and head to the West Side. Brush Up Buffalo announced yesterday that their annual day of painting on Saturday, June 16 will transform 10 low-income homes in the neighborhood of Plymouth Avenue and Hudson Street.
“This is the first time in Brush Up Buffalo’s 11-year history that we’re coming to the West Side,” said Roseann Scibilia, president of Brush Up Buffalo. “The neighborhood we’re painting is a true gem – it’s a mixed income street with some houses in good shape and others needing some love. Our goal is to see entire streets transformed.”
The organization has teamed up with Heart of the City Neighborhoods, Inc. as part of the ongoing Plymouth Avenue Reclamation Project, which recently rehabbed and reclaimed two houses on the street. This year will be different than the past, said Brush Up Vice President Tracey Drury, because they’re tackling a neighborhood with larger, more intricate homes.
Organizers are calling for more than 700 volunteers to sign up for the day-long event, during which they plan to include extra gardening and clean-up, in addition to the exterior painting, to truly make an impact on the neighborhood. Volunteers and groups of all sizes are encouraged to sign up (you can do so here), and sponsors are needed to help defray the costs. Find out more by emailing or calling the organizers at 250-3353.
“It takes a little bit of everyone to pull this event off,” Drury said. “The satisfaction this work provides and the results it displays are immediate and really do make a difference in these neighborhoods.”
Since the event began in 1996, Brush Up Buffalo has painted more than 200 homes in 10 neighborhoods throughout the city. In just five hours last year, more than 600 volunteers painted 18 homes in the Lovejoy District.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

I have volunteered for this group in the past and had a great time doing it. The people are fun, the work is relaxing and you really can see the impact from one day's worth of work on the streets. I look forward to doing it again this year!
