Bruni's Cakes & More

I was recently told about Bruni's on Grant Street, a bakery that specializes in Puerto Rican sweets. Located in a former paint store in the blocks that stretch between Amherst Street and Military, Bruni's story is a tale of passion and entrepreneurship. Brunilda Rodriguez began experimenting in her home kitchen with classic Puerto Rican pastries two years ago. Finding love for the work, she also began taking cake decorating courses. A year and a half ago she moved into 1027 Grant Street and overhauled it, redecorating and installing a kitchen and retail area.
Puerto Rican desserts line the display case. On my visit there were pastelillos of crisp, puff pastry filled with sweet guava and dusted with powdered sugar, quesitos of baked pastry augmented by a dripping of corn syrup and lined with a thick layer of sweetened cream cheese, and wedges of spicy bread pudding. On some days she has also fresh flan. There are also chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies, brownies, cannoli and freshly baked bread. Everything is remarkably inexpensive- large cookies made from scratch are a mere 3 for $1.00, and the handmade Puerto Rican pastries are less than $2 a piece.

But Bruni's Cakes & More has really made its name by furnishing customers with one-of-a-kind custom cakes. Bruni likes a challenge, and showed me a book packed with photos of her hundreds (maybe thousands) of creations. Character cakes and kid’s birthday cakes are popular, but very difficult wedding cakes and special occasion cakes are her favorite. During our chat she showed me the sketch for a cake she's making for an upcoming sweet sixteen party. The main portion of the cake stands atop pillars over a fountain. Surrounding cakes are connected to the main body of the design by crystal-looking staircases. The piped icing detail is tremendous.
When I asked Bruni about what else she does that people might find of interest she told me about a bride that came from Miami to marry a Buffalo boy. She wanted a vegan cake. Though Bruni had never made one before, and the organic ingredients were unfamiliar to her, she took the opportunity to do something new and ran with it. The cake was a huge success and Bruni has found herself a niche. A good thing to keep in mind for any of you that are vegans, vegan cakes are not easy to find.

In Buffalo, and elsewhere, most bakeries survive because of their commercial accounts. I think any area restaurateur that feels that Bruni's breads or sweets might fit their menu should seriously consider giving her a call; her prices are right ,and everything is made with love and care.
Bruni's is only open three days a week: Thursdays from 7AM - 3PM, Friday from 7AM -3PM, and Saturday from 9AM - 5PM.

It was a beautiful day for Sunday brunch, so the only choice was a restaurant that still had an open patio, where the food was going to be great.
Betty's it was. Not only was I able to have my Jack Russell terrier tableside next to the short, flower box laden fence, but I got to sit in the sun. The angle was steep for noon, a telling sign of shorter days, and if you don't believe me, look at the shadow the home fries cast.
Betty's is one of those places where you'll run into pe …
There have been many reincarnations at 752 Elmwood Avenue over the past couple of years. Wasabi is the newest restaurant nestled next door to Fowlers Chocolates and right across the street from Spot Coffee. When you enter you are greeted with exposed brick, sleek furniture and a gleaming sushi bar where colorful sashimi sits like little gems in a glass case. It is a small restaurant that can seat 12 at the tables and about 10 at the bar. Sitting at the sushi bar is a treat and ent …
The day Edritos opened on Elmwood Avenue several years ago, I was a happy man. I powered down more than my fair share of burritos back in those days. When it moved downtown into the Key Center, I no longer frequented the establishment. I just wasn’t downtown often enough to stop in. But Edritos has moved again, this time to Hertel Avenue between Parkside and Wallace.
My wife and I dropped by for takeout earlier today. I am pleased to report that my burrito was as delicious as …
Marcos Vargas has had a slew of restaurant locations around the West Side of Buffalo in his 24 years of doing business here, but the latest move to Niagara Street has got to be the best yet.
Vargas hails from Puerto Rico. Before Buffalo, he had restaurants in New Jersey and on 57th Street in Brooklyn. This is a family business, and customer loyalty is built in, which is one of the reasons Vargas manages to keep his prices so low. You can get your salty/sweet and crunchy craving …

I'm telling everyone--you have to try P Rican desserts! If you've never had a pastelillo (1st pic on post), buy one. They are amazing. I travel to PR about once a year and the desserts there are my favorite part of the trip. I wish Bruni "Good Luck" in her new business and plan on stopping by really soon. It's great to see a new PR bakery in the city. I hope this one sticks around.
