BRO Sunday Coffee Talk?

We tried this out a couple of years ago and it was hit or miss. As suggested by one of our readers it was a Sunday morning coffee talk. A post that was dedicated to nothing other than letting people talk about whatever they feel like. Is there an issue out there that you have wanted to discuss, but have not had the opportunity to do so without straying from the thread at hand? We’ll try it again… and if it works it works…
This post was suggested by a few commentors in days past. Hey, some times there are topics of interest that serve more as questions or thoughts. I’m also curious to know what sort of things people have on their minds on a Sunday morning.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

I have real concerns about the sudden low profile and secrecy around the consolidation meetings of Kaleida's and ECMC's hospital systems in compliance with the Berger Commission. John Simpson seems to have an openly declared bias toward Kaleida, as reported earlier this year in the Buffalo News Sunday magazine. My personal experiences with both hospital systems is that ECMC is far more responsive and responsible to the public, including when there is an issues around quality of care. Simpson's bias might skew the power against the board's reflection of that. There is at least one department which is laying claim to outstanding client success stories, which is also falsifying client records to pad that success fallacy. My own records from that department support my concern in that the supervising treatment provider was publicly disciplined by New York State's Office of the Professions last year for said falsifications of my records. I know this has been going on with other patients there. I'd like to know if anyone knows when Simpson is going to open the consolidation meetings to the public so I can attend and voice my concerns about the quality and responsiveness of care we all will receive when we have a one entity system of care.

For a nice recap on all the development planned or underway downtown, be sure to read Sharon Linstedt's front page story today in the News.
Includes this interesting tid-bit on the status of the Statler and City Tower anchor tenant talks:
To date, Issa has spent some $15 million on the Statler, Hamberger said, with 135 hotel rooms expected to open next summer. Planning for City Tower is also progressing, with preliminary agreements for an office tenant and a major hotel chain to occupy more than one third of the 1.2 million-square foot structure.

I'd like to hear from people who went to the Public Meeting at the Ct. St Armory, Thursday, to see what the PBA has in mind for the expanded Plaza. Did you speak? Will you submit comments and questions, in writing by the Oct 29 deadline?

I'm wondering if BRO will ever come clean about its Digg.com scandal from August.

I'm wondering what ever happened to the planned "public sculptiure garden" in front of the new B-P. There is a competition in progress for two outdoor pieces of art. But what happened to the public space that was supposed to go on Elmwood, in response the concerns aired at the meetings help at the Crane Library.

Frankster-
Allow me. I have to disagree, first of all, that there was any sort of scandal. These were actual news stories that, though written, were not posted on our front page. They're not, how you say, Buffalo Rising material. They're too sensational, odd and rare, and we wouldn't be bothered with putting them in our readers' faces because they don't typify our city or the people in it.
Now let's look at where you found the "scandalous" items. WNY Media put them up on their front page wth accusations of our being somehow duplicitous (Horrors!) when in fact, we stayed wthin our tenets by not putting these--I repeat--actual news stories on our front page.
Next, we were accused of trying to drive up our traffic. This becomes even more of a conundrum when WNY Media's act of posting the "scandal" on their front page drove up their traffic as well as BRO's, as well as Digg.
Being a print-o-phile, I don't profess to knowing everything about this electronic part of the company I work for (we have techies for that who are in their early twenties and speak quite a different language than me, but I love them anyway) but my primative understanding is that the whistle-blower--WNY Media--stood to enjoy an unusual upsurge in traffic by posting the supposed scandal, and keeping it up on their front page despite their apologies.
So, Frankster, it would be good to simply let this die...or if you so choose, you can keep putting this out there, driving up the traffic for the three entities. Frankly, I don't think anyone cares except in a National Enquirer sort of way.
In the meanwhile, we'll keep doing what we do best, putting the good word out there.

I second the question about Latina's on Elmwood.
Additionally, what would it realistically take to get major retailers that are not in the Galleria Mall to create a strip downtown? I'm thinking of one or two blocks of just continuous dt shopping. If anyone has been to georgetown in dc, thats kinda what I'm trying to explain.

QE, how come you never show up with the same significant other more than twice.----- Just because a bunch of old Italians beat you at pool, don't give up the game.-----why do we need positive reinforcement from strangers, we got you.----- you actually ate the whole thing.

Bravo, ECB. Excellent spin. If it was all that innocent, BRO founders would have been loud and proud about giving their side of the story. I am amazed that they left the link in my first comment this long, considering how quickly they censored it when it first appeared in BRO comments in August.

Frankster, you're overthinking this. Last year when we were called out by The Beast, it was my suggestion that we lie very, very still. We felt the hot, acrid breath of The Beast on our faces--and before we knew it, they'd chucked us on the chin and sent us on our merry way.
Sometimes it simply doesn't make sense to struggle, especially when doing so can have the effect of alerting twice as many people to the embarrassing accusation in the first place.
It's done, Frank. Nobody cares.
