BRO on the road: Toronto

Buffalo Rising is heading up to Toronto today. We’re going to try to find out what Torontonians think about our city… if they think about it all. This will be our first time heading over the border with cameras, and we want to know (from you) what sort of questions you would like to ask.
We’re going to be walking into some shops and restaurants. And of course we’ll be heading to the St. Lawrence Market and China Town. We have a few questions prepared, but we’re looking for a few more. We are going to check comments/questions throughout the course of the day… and we’ll be looking for even more questions in a couple of weeks when we do this again.
If Buffalo is going to market itself to places like Toronto, then it is important to understand how the citizens feel about us already. We're also hoping to connect with Lorne Opler - a BRO writer who lives in TO. Lorne has already helped to give us some insight into certain perceptions, and we'll hopefully hear from him today firsthand regarding how perceptions might be changing... if at all.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

When they get off the Peace Bridge are they perplexed that there are no signs telling them how to get places?

Do they visit Buffalo for theatre, shopping, Elmwood?
If not, what would entice them to take a trip to Buffalo?

Here's a question: What do they think about Buffalo? Do they think about it at all?

The Buffalo Niagara Enterprise has been talking for the last 2 years about finding companies that would like to establish their American headquarters in the Buffalo area. Everyone's favorite Canadian beer. Molson's, decided to decided to do just that on its own with no assistance from the BNE. I think many of us would like to know if the folks in Toronto think that's a good idea or not since a positive answer could be a hopeful sign for our unusual economy.

It was Labbat's that moved to Buffalo, not Molson...and that was like 10 jobs, hardly a revolution

Have you ever been to Buffalo? If so, what was the most annoying thing about your trip? What was the best thing about your trip? Now that the Canadian currency is appreciating against the American dollar, will you visit more?

I travel to Toronto about 4 times a month for work. On my way back over the Peace Bridge, as previously stated, there is no real sign welcoming you to our city. There is a small wooden sign that just says Welcome to Buffalo. If you dont know where you are going there is no easy way to find your way into the "heart" of the city.
I think the city would do itself well to have signs which lead people to places such as Elmwood, The Theatre District, and Chippewea.
Enought people from Toronto come down for the Sabres v. Leafs games but the key is to get them to come for a weekend and really explore the city. The knowledge many people have of Buffalo would be Peral Street and HSBC.
With the dollar much better I think know is the time to seize the economic tide and draw our friends to the North into our city.

The times I've been to Toronto, someone asked where I was from, and I responded :Buffalo", the response was NEVER positive. Standard responses could be summarized as:
1) "Seen any eight bell barn burners in South Tonawanda lately, eh? Irv Weinstein, eh?" 2) Comments about the trademark nasal "eyacksint" (Julie Fine, Patti Novak, the woman in Dan Georger Mitsubishi radio commercials, etc), even though I don't speak in one. 3) Visited Buffalo once, and was shocked to see no people downtown. 4) Visited Buffalo once, got lost, and ended up at the corner of Genesee and Moselle. (WTF? Seriously, how is it that whenever Canadians take a wrong turn ANYWHERE in the region, they always end up in ground zero of Buffalo's worst neighborhood?)
I always thought it was quite rude that Torontonians seemed to have absolutely no qualms about insulting Buffalo to the faces of its residents.

MOst common opinion when I'm in Toronto:
I GO TO BUFFALO/NIAGARA TO SHOP AT THE OUTLETS THEN COME STRIAGHT HOME BECUASE THERE IS NOTHING TO DO IN DOWNTOWN BUFFALO.
Dugh, create a travel package for these people, give them a discount on food or hostel to if they stay the night.
Downtown is nothing more than hole in the wall bars - there is nothing to see there - no waterfront, no nothing.
This town is too far behind the curve to catch up

Why are you doing this? I don't think they put much thought into the subject. What do they care about Buffalo with the exception of the Galleria to shop because it's cheaper here. And who really wants their opinion or approval anyway? I think we all know what the responses will be. You are going to have to do a lot of editing with this story.
