Yesterday we headed over to Urban Roots to catch Richard Price's workshop called 'Grow-Your-Own Garden Seedlings Organically'. It was the first workshop of the year, and the first workshop that we had ever attended at Urban Roots. That was why we were not sure what to expect. We certainly didn't expect a standing-room-only packed house. When we arrived all the front seats around the workstations in front were already taken. And the middle of the store was filled with people who were resting and leaning on anything that they could find. Organizers went to the basement to bring up oversized terracotta pots so people could sit and take notes on the paper packets that were handed out. Even the back of the store was alive with customers, employees and kids all milling about.

I later learned that many interested people had already been turned away (via phone), as the original capacity had been met shortly after the workshop had been announced. It was people like us who never called ahead that contributed to the ultimate congestion. By the time Richard had gotten underway with his workshop, everyone had found a spot and despite the rustling nature of the kids in the back (which added to the charm), everyone appeared to find the workshop enlightening. As spring approaches there will be additional room for these types of workshops out in the garden as well as next door in the cafe. In the meantime, it is incredible to think that this little gardening cooperative has managed to pull of such a successful launch to its 2008 workshop season.

*One of the coolest gardening hints that I learned yesterday was how to recycle Venetian blinds into garden markers…

For those who are counting, Urban Roots' membership has reached 328 members. I bet that number grew by a few more people yesterday.

Richard Price runs a wonderful workshop and really takes the time and energy to explain how to tend to your seedlings. While I was there I planted some heirloom tomato seeds, of which Urban Roots has several varieties.

There's a great story about that Member-Owner sign, Newell. It's part of a Newport Cigarette sign from the departed Queen Sheba corner store...

We are up to 329, and at least two more people yesterday said they would be sending in checks...

I really wanted to go to this but I guess it was best I didn't show up to a packed house. I am glad it did so well and hopefully they will have more in the future.

I too was part of the congestion... I didn't know that there was a call-ahead reservation since I got my info from the BRO article. I did join that day though so I'll tell myself that helps balance it out ;-). I believe I as 329... just don't have my card on me.

I loved the workshop. You could tell Richard had been doing this for a while and he genuinely wanted to help others learn and start their own. Everybody I talked to was really nice and friendly too... It helps make shy people like me feel more at home.

That was the first time I've ever seen Harvey too. Geeze, you're a lot younger looking than I expected for seeing your name involved in so many things and hearing about all the work you're always doing.

I have been a friend of Dick for many years and his knowledge of plants reaches well beyond simple gardening. He brings a naturalists perspective and with his gentle nature is a true "teacher". We need more people like Dick to share their experience and enthusiasm.
