Bonny Bonz @ buffOLA

Yesterday was the first day that I had the chance to see what the âclimateâ was at the buffOLA LaSalle dog park. It wasnât long ago that a four-month old puppy was fatally wounded by a much larger dog. Despite the terrible incident, spirits were high when I paid a visit to the park around 2pm. All in all there were about 25 dogs running around and Bonnie Orffeo (photo) had set up shop outside of the front gate. Bonnie was selling homemade dog treats (a bag for $2.50) and appeared to be quite content with her homegrown business. âI started in the fall,â she told me. âAnd I was out here all winter long too. The dogs have gotten to know me pretty well. I started baking dog treats for my own dogs (her German shepherds were featured in a BRO header last fall â they were all wearing yellow raincoats), and I decided that the dog park would be a good place to make a little extra money. During the harvest months I also set up a vegetable stand at the corner of Richmond and Utica.â
Bonnie has already applied for all of her licensing to sell the nutritious and all natural treats. You can find her at the dog park on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays⌠she also sets up after work hours during the week. The only problem that she has run into so far is not being able to bring her own dogs along because of the sun, rain or snow. âIâm looking into buying a shelter for my dogs,â she told me. âMost likely a tent or something. This park has been very successful so far and I believe that when it moves to its new location (nearby) the park won't see those freak incidents like tragedy that we saw.â Hopefully as the dog park grows, the need for distinct big and small dog areas will be tackled. In the meantime the users of the park have begun to police the dogs on their own. If a dog starts showing any sign of aggression the dog's owner is politely asked to leave. Hopefully this newfound awareness will help to make the park a place where people and pets can continue to have fun.
Maybe in the future we'll see more people come down to the park selling different types of wares. So donât forget to bring a few bucks to the dog park and support this budding entrepreneur. Otherwise your dogs will be jealous of the rest of the dogs that are munching away on chicken-liver and salmon treats (those are her two best sellers that she keeps in a cooler). Since I was on my bike I grabbed a bag of vegetarian treats for my dog to go.

As we mentioned in our previous post, weâre in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. Weâre almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our usersâ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

"vegetarian treats for my dog"
Dogs, like cats are carnivores. It probably isn't very good for them to be fed veggie food or treats no matter what we perceive as healthy for humans they aren't humans. All their teeth are pointy for a reason.

I know many dogs who love carrots. Everything in moderation, I say. But I do agree with you, sbrof. Dogs need their meat.

While I applaud Bonnie's hard work and enthusiasm, I think it is important to just point out that she is not connected with the LaSAlle Park Off Leash Area in any way. A private enterprise ( good luck with those permits !), her business is her own and does not contribute any funding to the Buffalo Off Leash Area.

they're TREATS not a meal. If my porky little pug is going to have a treat between meals, I'd rather it be crunchy fiber.

Another example of how properly conceived public spaces (not profitable in themselves) generate business. Active urban fiber nurtures local economies, not the other way around.

Why limit it to dogs, she should set-up shop in front of the city mission or other "inner city" locations and move some serious product. Hell the State should be subsidizing her b/c just like her treats, physical fiber replenishes our internal growth and sustains our generational village with peace and prosperity.

I think Bonnie is going to regret allowing her little business to be advertised. The NY Sales Tax folks might not see it, but the city Permit folks probably will. Maybe the Health Dept. The mind reels. "already applied" does not equal permitted. I hope she's covered. I am experienced in art of entreprenurial vending and I wish Bonnie much luck.

"What a shame that the above comments are so negative and sarcastic." UNLESS YOU LIVE IN FANTASYLAND..a real and practical observation by just one of many who know the ways of the bureaucratic world. By the time govt. gets done with her, she'll be lucky if she makes a dime a bag. spend some time in city hall, and see the quagmired maze of what any samll business owner must go thru.... not including frustration. DO you wonder why mostt people just say ...the hell with it!!
