b-Movie Night @ The New Phoenix Theater

Starting this fall, a few Johnson Park/Allentown neighborhood people are going to be getting together and running a laid-back movie night. If everything goes according to plan, the idea is to show low budget, obscure b-movies. Our group has begun to conduct preliminary research on movie rights (doing it by the book) and locations. We think that we've found the ideal venue at this point, and for anyone who has ever seen a theatrical performance at the New Phoenix Theater (on Johnson Park), then you know why it's the perfect spot.
We're hoping that the shows will attract somewhere around 25 people - of course the line-up of flicks will not be for everybody. Movie titles will range from Mars Needs Women to Frankenstein's Daughter. We're working out the logistics with the theater and snooping around for a screen and a projector. Yes, we'll serve up some popcorn and maybe even incorporate some live theatrical surprises... you never know. If anyone has ever been to movie night of this type, we're looking for some idea, so let us know where you've been and what you've seen.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

Ironically, saw this just after e-mailing David Torke some information about an outdoor film series here in My Fair City. The projection is being handled by a company in Boston which specializes in large-scale outdoor projection, and they confirmed that their equipment could be used for something like David's idea for showing films on the side of grain elevators. Which, of course, would be in the realm of cosmically awesome.
Back down to earth: the Phoenix looks like a great venue for this, and these movie showings are great ways to build community and are huge fun. We've been seeing increasing interest in these neighborhood movie nights in My Fair City - one neighborhood bar holds them occasionally in their parking lot and projects them on the side of the building next door, and in my neighborhood one resident simply puts up a screen between his house and an agreeable neighbor, whips up the best popcorn ever, and invites the neighborhood over (BYOC).
Usually this starts and stays "low budget" - someone rents or borrows a DVD, runs it through something as simple as a laptop/projector combo, and voila. I think that's OK legally for noncommercial showings, because it's sort of the equivalent of inviting friends over to watch a movie. For something more sophisticated, or to project film prints, I'd check in with a projectionist at the Market Arcade, as they hold an annual film series showing classic film from prints. I got an impromptu tour of their projection booth (more like room, actually) one day, and it's a treasure trove of film equipment. Depending on how far people want to go with this, it might even be possible to partner with them, where they provide the print, the equipment, and a projectionist. Film prints are archival material and not always easy to come by, so it can be helpful to partner with an organization which already has connections for getting, storing, and showing them.
The great thing about using the Phoenix as a venue is that there's space to set up a decent, wide screen - and there are certain movies that simply must be seen on the big screen to be appreciated and truly enjoyed. Cool stuff.

MRogers, right on. Forbidden Planet is awesome on a full screen. Angry Red Planet is classic B fare, too. Some of the coolest flicks to see in group settings are the spaghetti westerns (especially The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly) since they're such a cultural touchstone, and plain good fun...potential spaghetti dinner followed by spaghetti western--?

OOOppps, oone more, maybe not a "B" but has the same "audience response" feel to it almost as good as Rocky Horror - Mommy Dearest - everyone can bring Comet Cleanser, wire hangers, cold cream and wear shoulder pads - good one to yell at the screen and more. "Don't f*** with me, fellas!"
