Bidwell Farmers' Market Open Until Christmas

While scoping out the Bidwell Farmers' Market (at Elmwood) this past Saturday I stopped to read the market's sandwich board. I was happy to see that the market has extended operational days this winter. For the first time, the Bidwell Market will be open all the way up until Christmas. Then, shortly after that, the market will move to its indoor location at Lafayette Church. I understand that the plan is to keep the customers outdoors for a bit longer by providing all of the holiday essentials.
This winter, when you're thinking about heading out to shop for your wreath and tree (or cider and poinsettia), remember to support your local farmers' market. By the looks of it, there were plenty of supporters a few days ago when the trucks pulled up and unloaded countless pumpkins and dried corn stalks. Hopefully the market will have plenty of time to tell frequenters that there will be just a short downtime before the indoor session begins. The farmers' market has become quite the social scene on Elmwood... it's hard to remember what Elmwood was like without it.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

I think that as a commercial enterprise, the Farmers' Market does not belong in Bidwell Parkway, which is flanked with residences. It's just one more example of the City of Buffalo caving to the Elmwood Village Association when it comes to issuing a permit for events in Bidwell Parkway. Residents are never brought into the process.
That being said, if the Farmers' Market is such a boon, why not share it by moving it from week to week. One week in Bidwell, then Lincoln, then Chapin Parkway. Here's a novel idea: move it to Deleware Park Lake area. Let me guess...the business interests in the Elmwood Village Association would oppose it, as would the residents on Chapin and Lincoln.

Like any business, a the Farmer's Market definitely needs consistency in location to be able to flourish. People can depend upon it being there every Saturday morning. Many people simply wouldn't go if they didn't know where it was every week. You'd really be depending upon people to memorize the schedule or always being able to find out where it is every week. No way. The Farmer's Market also needs the visibility and traffic that Elmwood Avenue offers. Locating it on Chapin or near Delaware Park would hide it away from the public. I also don't think that the surrounding businesses, outside of Cafe Aroma and a little bit at Talking Leaves, benefit much from the market being located there. The other businesses aren't really open until 11 or 12, when the market is nearly over. If they experienced so much payoff from the market, don't you think they would open their doors at 8, 9 or even 10 in the morning when to coincide with market traffic? Bidwell Parkway is public land, and I imagine the farmers market was established to give the residents of the area fresh produce and local options for their groceries. I can't believe anyone would actually complain about this. Let me guess, you have to walk an extra block to get to your car? I live no where near the market and have to regularly park 1.5-2 blocks away to get to my car. Living in the city, especially in a vibrant neighborhood, is about living among a community, with great amenities as well as some things that have to be dealt with, not in an isolated cul-de-sac. The farmers market has been around for years now, its a great asset to the city and Bidwell.

Wirepaladin, good thought. Take something successful and start to tinker with it.
