Beer in the City: Countdown to Brewfest '07

Russ Pawlak, President of the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation Board of Directors, says, “we expect a crowd of 4,000 people this year, up from the (roughly) 3,300 of last year.” He stresses the importance of the better bathroom facilities this year, as “last year the smoking area was right in front of the bathrooms, which made it look like the lines were even longer than they were.” This year the smoking area has been moved, and there will be adequate facilities for a crowd of 4,000.
The breweries represented at this year's festival are excellent. Although “it's true that many of the same breweries (that were featured in last year's event) are returning, they are not allowed to bring the same beers,” according to Carla LiVecchi, Marketing/Development Coordinator for Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center. This rule should increase the variety and creativity of the available samples.
Speaking of “samples,” this year the event has moved to a token system, meaning that with your ticket you will receive 20 tokens, each good for one tasting (that's 60 ounces of beer). “We went up to the festival in Montreal, and this is how they (and all the big festivals) do it,” says Mr. Pawlak, “it's about tasting, not guzzling.” If you're set on guzzling and 20 tokens just won't cut it, additional three-ounce samples can be purchased at $1 each.
Food vendors will be on hand as well. The four confirmed vendors at this point represent a great variety of foods that work well with craft beer. The German cuisine of Ulrich's Tavern was born to pair with beer. Steel Drums' Caribbean, Ike & BG's Barbecue, and Pizza Plant are all no-brainers as well. More food vendors may be added as the date approaches.
Designated drivers will be admitted for free (they must be 21 or older to enter, however). A special section will be set aside for them and will have free snacks, pop, coffee, and water. Movies and videos about the Central Terminal will be screened. Other entertainment will be available as well but is still to be determined.
A list of this year's breweries can be found at the Brewfest website. It includes some impressive names. Flying Bison will be featured, as the hometown brewery. Their stand will be located within the old marketplace section of the Terminal (for those of you who attended Artists & Models, that's where the main stage was set up for the musical acts). The other breweries will line the walls of the main concourse. Large and bright signs will clearly direct attendees to the brewery of their choice.
All the proceeds of this event are going to the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation and Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center, so don't worry, no one's making any money off of you (except good causes). Besides, the money will be well worth it: getting a chance to meet and talk to some of the guys (and girls) who brew your favorite beers, while sipping on their latest creations, is sure to be a great time. You can purchase tickets through the Brewfest website (linked above). The event will likely sell out again this year, so make sure you get them soon.
Addendum
In the weeks leading up to Brewfest, upcoming Beer in the City articles will take a look at some of the best brews that will be available at the event, to help give you an idea of what to look for when you're there. With that in mind, if there is a specific brewery or beer you'd like to hear more about, please let me know!

Fresh and Fabulous from the Farm – A Sunday Supper
One of my favorite things to do while assisting at the Slow Food Buffalo, Chef Demo table at the Bidwell Market is to people-watch.
I get a kick out of observing the customers. They scurry from table to table curiously checking out what each vendor has brought in that week to tantalize their taste buds. Little kids sneak a blueberry while some people secretly squeeze a tomato. Many smell the flowers, sample some sausage or eng …
After a brief summer hiatus, SAMPLE’s Supper Club resumes in a few weeks. The monthly occasion returns with an eye on the season and an appreciation for quality beer.
For the uninitiated, SAMPLE’s Supper Club features a “food forward” six course feast that tempts the taste buds and the imagination. If Chef Adam Goetz’s thoughtful and refined contemporary menu isn’t enough to tempt you, perhaps the pairing of exquisite beers with each course will seal the deal. Las …
It was a beautiful day for Sunday brunch, so the only choice was a restaurant that still had an open patio, where the food was going to be great.
Betty's it was. Not only was I able to have my Jack Russell terrier tableside next to the short, flower box laden fence, but I got to sit in the sun. The angle was steep for noon, a telling sign of shorter days, and if you don't believe me, look at the shadow the home fries cast.
Betty's is one of those places where you'll run into pe …
There have been many reincarnations at 752 Elmwood Avenue over the past couple of years. Wasabi is the newest restaurant nestled next door to Fowlers Chocolates and right across the street from Spot Coffee. When you enter you are greeted with exposed brick, sleek furniture and a gleaming sushi bar where colorful sashimi sits like little gems in a glass case. It is a small restaurant that can seat 12 at the tables and about 10 at the bar. Sitting at the sushi bar is a treat and ent …

NBJOHN,
i think that would automatically become one of the coolest breweries in the world. how great would it be if we could get one of the bigger craft breweries out there to move to bflo and inhabit the terminal? it's too big for a startup, but for an already-successful brewery... it may be a pipe dream, but how exciting to envision! they'd have to brew polish-style beers for sure. hey, you never know, maybe if flying bison continues to grow, it could happen!
is there a venture capitalist out there who wants to help us do this?

I went over to the West side the other day to try and find the brewery. After praying that I did not get a flat and dodging a few stray bullets I found it. Thought they had a retail/tap room - nope. Quite a bit of security fencing though

NBJOHN, Flying Bison is right near the Riverside/Tonawanda border. It is an industrial area but I wouldn't consider it dangerous. Although I respect your opinion, I don't want anyone scared off from visiting because of that account. I've never had a hint of a problem there. Also, they do have a retail/tap room- it is located around the back of the building. I was just there last Sunday. Perhaps they weren't open when you visited.

al-alo, thanks for the response. I didn't see it before I replied- that's what I get for leaving a half-finished comment sitting around before posting it! I'm not sure of the days/times either, but you can always give a call before making the trip: 716.873.1557. According to Tim, as long as someone's working in the brewery, it's open (that's at least 4 days a week).

In hindsight, I was probably too harsh on the area. Living on Wellington Road near Hertel (NBJohn - stands for North Buffalo John) I would also love a tap room off of Hertel - Walking distance. Though I really thing Buffalo could use more microbreweries. Redevelop some of the old labels? Just brainstorming....

AuburnAve- Thanks for the input. I'll look into it. al-alo & NBJOHN- a craft brewery/pub/tap room on Hertel seems like a natural fit. It would have it's own niche in the area and further add to the diversity of the neighborhood. I wonder if we'll see the craft brewing industry start to plateau, however. So many new breweries have opened in the past 10 years- it has to slow down at some point. Although a pub in the vein of Pearl St would do well, I wonder about the viability of another company like Flying Bison in our market. That said, I would whole-heartedly support it!

Good news for Beer-fiends: They've upped the number of tokens from 12 to 20!
Considering an after-party? Then consider heaind over to Corpus Christi, 199 Clark St., for their Dozynki, or Polish Harvest Festival- with plenty of Polish Food, Beer & Wine... and hopfully, mead!
