Be Responsible!

Story Options

Saint Patrick's day might be second only to New Years Eve as a DUI epidemic navigating streets checkered with DUI roadblocks.

Glenn Murray's story below, published last New Years Eve, is reposted as a reminder that it's not safe to drive, even if merely "buzzed."

Murray says the winner of his top ten worst defenses he encountered in defending DUI cases for over 20 years was the client charged with DUI at 80 mph in Cheektowaga who implored the cop to let him go by saying "Aw C'mon - It's Saint Patrick's Day!"

Judges say there is no good excuse for DUI.

Here's the article.

The parade is good fun for all, it is a shame that a select few are able to put a dark cloud over it with getting drunk and starting fights. I hope this year does not see any of that!

All that has to be done is allow the parade-goers that wnt to party - party in the bars, and enforce the open container law to assure families that attend the parade don't have to witness drunks falling and vomiting all over themselves. It would, at least, cut down on the fights in the street somewhat.

Before heading to the bars after the parade, I plan on running into my "cold" storage facility on Allen to pick up a few Butter lambs for the "cultured" few of Buffalo...lol

Drinking and driving is an artform that many attempt, but few succeed at. Amateurs need not apply.

Yes, what DUI checkpoints in the City? We sorely need some on days like St. P's.

Before I sign off for the day, the "cultured" few comment was aimed at one person who slammed me in an earlier post, NOT at the city as a whole. I have the upmost respect for this city and the people who live here and are working so hard to help turn it around. I also know that this is one of the most cultured city's in America with a great theatre season, huge arts scene, music is off the wall etc. I did not word it correctly and feel sorry for those that hide behind a blog name only to slam people, their idea's and thoughts or this city! Good day all...

I have to agree that it should be our personal responsibility to make sure we are not a danger to others but part of the revelry that happens at the Parade is part because of the pent up annoyance that you can never have a drink outside unless in your back yard. I know people who have gotten the cops called on them for enjoying a beer on their front porch.

In many places drinking in public is allowed. You know what happens because of it... nothing that wouldn't happen normally. So instead of going and blowing their money at a bar they could hang out with friends at a BBQ in the park. Or chill at a downtown monument have a couple drinks and enjoy the scenery.

Drinking and driving that is a totally different problem than public drinking. That is a problem that we have caused ourselves by spreading our residential areas all around the county. I live where I live because I know I can walk home after a night out. Most people don't have that luxury, and they are not going to stop drinking. So they drive home, because of the lack of options. We either need to drastically improve our transit system or bring residential areas closer to the places where they want to go and enjoy themselves.
