The first thing we have to do is beg Avalon Scarves not to break the mold for this one quite yet. True, they were only planning on making 300 of this first edition snow globe of Buffalo City Hall, which would make those 300 quite valuable...but talk about turning green with envy.

This collectors' item, commissioned by Fan Markel owner of The Floristry, is going to be highly coveted, especially among ex-pats. (Remember Dorothy peering through the glass to see a distraught Auntie Em calling for her?) This globe will certainly create a similar longing for home. And for those of us who live here and love the city, it's a pretty chochkey to put on our mantles. Additionally, each globe will come with a card bearing information about the building.

The Floristry will be holding an open house this Sunday, and Mark said it would be a good time to place orders with Markel @ $49.95 each.

Paul Morgan, owner of Avalon, designed the globe, and according to Avalon partner, Mark Nowak, this is the first in a series that will feature Buffalo's architectural treasures.

A departure from Avalon's usual wares, Morgan normally handcrafts silk and silk velvet scarves for men and women, as well as evening wraps and ponchos. He also offers embroidered Buffalo-themed polar fleece scarves and imprinted Buffalo tote bags. Located on Main Street, Morgan and Nowak participate in many charity sales around WNY, including Gilda's House, Essential Care for Children, Roswell Park, Planned Parenthood, AIDS Community Services and more.

Avalon's other specialty items are available at Positively Main Street, Wild Things, The Floristry, Get Dressed, Chochkey's, and the West End Gallery in East Aurora.

Mark and Paul would very much like suggestions about which architectural subject you'd like to see next, so be sure to put in a mention for your favorite landmark.

Sorry, people! Mark called me on this the other day, just as a heads-up, and I was so excited that I posted it without all of the information. For instance, I didn't give Fan her propers. So...here is the new and improved, updated post. I'll be happy for the first 300 of you to make it to the Floristry on Sunday because this little beauty is a keeper.

Funny, I have a Buffalo City Hall snowglobe that I found on the curb. Maybe from the 1980s? Made in Taiwan by a company called Silvestri. Has a mahogany-stained wooden base with a battery-operated something. Maybe a music box. I don't know what it plays because someone left batteries in it and they corroded.

haha but come on a "video" of a snowglobe that doesn't show it being shook and snowing!! how frustrating. I think you should differentiate between a video and a slide show. Just because it was made in iMovie or whatever mac calls it doesn't make it a video. Sorry about the rant but I got excited to see it in action and was disappointed.

I think the products is great. I like the detail. Maybe it can come with that artist sketch and a couple of words about the building details you are seeing. Not only beautiful but educational ;)

As for the next buildings there are always the standard / obvious choices which will make them money and perhaps after a while they could venture into past by gone buildings which show the richness of our history. Perhaps even state which parking lot currently is on the site and how idiotic it was to demo-them in the first place. ;) Political activism in a snow-globe... I like it!

Though the spelling can vary, if someone happens to alter the sign that reads "Chochkeys" at Auburn and Elmwood...we'll know where to look, hmmm?

Both Wikipedia and the American Heritage dictionary spell it TCHOTCHKE.

    Frankster-

Did you say you were in a long term w/ a librarian? Does she know you quote wikipedia?

Chochkey's Gift Shop Elmwood & Auburn streets Buffalo ,NY 716-882-0052

It has a variety of spellings, but here's the most prominent local use of the word. Wikipedia, while sometimes a good source, is not always credible because it's not a protected site. Beyond that, you shouldn't get your Yiddish out of an American Heritage Dictionary. But you were kidding about wikipedia, right?
