At The Small Boat Harbor

I stopped at the small boat harbor on my way home at about 2:00pm. The small boat harbor was littered with ice fishermen and their huts. There were kids of all ages enjoying the sunshine and camaraderie. And then there were the snow kites. A group of folks tethered to kites on top and snow boards beneath were weaving their way through the ice fisherman like a ballet on ice. They would come toward one another pass and go on to weave amongst the other brave souls out on the ice.

Zero Gravity Slideshow

The fellow with the anti gravity flag and jacket is a man by the name of Bill Myers from Wilson NY. Bill designs boards and reps for this anti gravity company. He was out enjoying the day with his buddy Matt Domonowsky from Hamburg. They had just returned from Vermont and are anxious to see more snow kiters out on the ice. They say it's an easy sport to learn...who knows? They were having a terrific time and making the most of an incredible Buffalo day.

I was taken in by their enthusiasm and invitation to get on the ice...even though I was in city clothes. I wish I had been braver and taken them up on their offer to jump over my head so I could get some really great photos. Hopefully they will be there another windy day in the near future.

With all the hot air being blown around regarding the Buffalo waterfront, it's nice to see some cold air is being used in positive way. Having never tried the sport, I can't imagine there is a place with more ideal conditions for this activity than right here in Buffalo..

Chris: thank you for attaching Bill's site...you can also email Bill at windwz2@aol.com. Get out there...these guys were taking full advantage of Buffalo's joys. Bill and co. are also involved in warmer kite sports when summer gets here. This is one great city...something for everyone every day!

Better hurry and get out. The snow is melting fast. Ice at Cargill was about 2 inches yesterday. Some of the less visible spots we ride are ECC south campus and Cancer Pile (big hill at Nike Base on Lakeview drive in Hamburg). Check out www.ikitesurf.com to check the wind.

Steve, Sell that windsurfing stuff and get some kites for the summer. Windsurfing is a great sport once you get your AARP card.

    Peter:

It takes a free spirit to know one!

The essence of joy...something to strive for each moment...you always have, and it enriches all who know you!

    All readers:

Peter is my Dad...the finest man in all the world. If there is a reason to stay in Buffalo, it's to be a part of a loving family and learn to cherish that joy that comes from time, trials, and true love.
