Perhaps you're familiar with public broadcasting and its noble intentions for communal enrichment through music. Or perhaps you just thought about Wayne's World and instead wondered why he wore such a devastatingly tight t-shirt. But if you look you'll see the wealth of opportunity provided for by a national airwave designated specifically for our local ambitions. Buffalo's favorite daughter, Ani DiFranco, is a prime example of broadcast worthy television with a member-supported local endorsement.

Today at 8 PM, WNED will broadcast "Live at Babeville," a concert filmed in Buffalo last year. It celebrated the grand opening of DiFranco's first venue project Asbury Hall, a century old church she saved from city demolition. Not only has she preserved the cathedral's classic beauty as a downtown staple, she's also developed a definitive sonic accomplishment in its design. The inside of the church was painstakingly dimensioned for the best possible sound; all managed by DiFranco who certainly isn't short on venue sound know-how after years of relentless touring.

Ani DiFranco's musical talent is nationally renowned. Thankfully she's never forgotten us, and this broadcast shines a light on a city we're proud of. So turn on WNED and watch DiFranco do what she does best; but also remember that the beautiful thing you're seeing and hearing is actually in your back yard.

Is this just local on WNED or broadcast to the larger PBS national network?

There's a HUGE difference between Public Access TV and Public Broadcasting. Public Access shows are those earnest low-budget productions you see on Time Warner Cable, and the only reason they exist is because TWC has a franchise agreement with the city that requires them to set aside a channel for the citizenry. Public Broadcasting, on the other hand, would include PBS stations like WNED, the one you refer to in this story. While there's a big difference between PBS and commercial TV stations like WKBW (no ads for the most part), you shouldn't confuse public broadcasting with public access TV. (If you happened to stroll into the WNED office with a home-produced tape and request a time slot to show it, they'd tell you to f*** off.)

    Nice pic of Ani, though.

I have to agree with gumby (I've never had the opportunity to say that...anyway...) What did the WNED broadcast have to do with public access? Funny that the one person who's done quite a bit for Buffalo get's a posting that's factually incorrect.

Sorry for the misrepresentation between public broadcast (PBS) and public access. (You have to admit, it was a good way for Brandon to make mention of Wayne's World. A play on "righteous"?)

Our best to Ani and her place in our community as one very righteous babe. (Picture Wayne and Garth doing the "we are not worthy" bow.)
