An Exquisite European Lunch

Yesterday, my dear friend Tamar and I decided to treat ourselves to lunch at a restaurant weâve been dying to go to. As we walked from our parking spaces to our destination, the heavenly scent of Bistro Europa drifted toward us.
Inside the cozy and colorful restaurant, we decided to splurge and try a number of things. Owner Mike Pijanowski once described the menu to me as European peasant food. Oh, if only the peasants had it this good. We began with the fondue, a remarkable portion for only $9. The warmed Gruyere was served with pieces of fresh red pepper, grapes, blanched asparagus, crusty bread and pencil-thin grissini. Paired with a good glass of wine, this shared dish would be an excellent choice for a couple out for a romantic evening- or two good friends looking for a yummy lunch!
Next we enjoyed potato pancakes ($6), they are served two to an order with sides of sour cream and caramelized onion, or a lovely combination of cinnamon and cooked apple slices (I loved all three). The pancakes were notably un-greasy, a challenge for many cooks. Full of flavor and well-prepared, an order of these would make a satisfactory lunch on a frigid winter day.
Finally, though we were rather full at this point, we decided that this rare opportunity (being moms and all) required that we not yet leave, making sure we sampled as much of the menu as we could manage. What a sacrifice! Tamar ordered a spicy, brothy soup loaded with chick-peas. I opted for the decadent risotto, made with small, very thin slices of prosciutto and crispy asparagus.
Besides the great food and warm atmosphere, the thing I like best about Europa is the flexibility of their menu. Daily specials are served and the items on the menu are the same for lunch or dinner. Divided in two, one side of the menu shows âsmall platesâ, the other offers âlargeâ. Because all of the dishes are made to order with the freshest of ingredients, guests may request that their meal be sized up or down. Feel free to order a larger portion of an appetizer or a small version of an entrĂ©e.
Serving fabulous food for lunch and dinner (and into the wee hours of the night on weekends) with take out just a phone call away, Europa Bistro is a lovely and much appreciated addition to the Elmwood Village.

A corner joint needn't be a dive.
And Papa Jake's doesn't make its patrons choose between a laid-back bar atmosphere and delicious, fresh food. Scott Leary, the new owner of Papa Jakeâs Saloon on Elmwood, knows how to provide casual comfort and a very satisfying dining experience.
âWe donât take shortcuts here at Papa Jakeâs,â Leary says. He proves this with Papa Jakeâs fresh and tasty menu. âI donât want to call this a late night menu, because we have amaz …
With the opening of more and more coffee houses downtown, some people wonder if Buffalo is really a coffee town. Buffalo is the original coffee town!
The "coffee break" which is taken for granted as a standard part of any work day has only been around for about a hundred years. Coffee culture has continued to flourish in this country and the espresso boom of the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s has seen to it that every other gas station in America now has a barista on staff. Perha …
It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Barâs dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. We were happy to try a Sojitio, a sake mojito, which had the right amount of mint without too much sweetness.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfullyâunlike 1950âs Tokyoâwhen this dino showed up our downtown wasnât flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980âs, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hitâitâs common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And itâs clearly Hog Heavenâ …

A great food experience! Worth the drive if you don't live in the immediate area. Flavorful and filling...and at the right price! Wine selections were also good. Will definitely be returning...
