Amy's Cinnamon Toast

Amy’s Place is a Buffalo favorite and has been for a very long time. Located across the street from UB’s South Campus, its atmosphere and clientele really typify the college dining experience. In many ways it is a classic greasy spoon, but its menu also caters to vegetarians and vegans with a number of flavorful offerings modeled after the cuisine of the Middle East.
Honestly, I have only ever had breakfast/brunch at Amy’s. I’m not one for sweets at breakfast, so I generally stick with eggs and home fries or a good omelet, and Amy’s does both well. Recently I have had an acquaintance rave to me about the french toast on a few occasions, so when I was in the neighborhood the other day, I decided to give it a try.
The L.A. Cinnamon Toast is available as a meal for $4.50, or as a side for $2.50. Why its called “L.A.” Cinnamon Toast, I cannot be sure. The use of “L.A.” in any menu description connotes spa cuisine to me, and this is as far away from a green salad without dressing as you can get.
I decided to order the side, as I’ve said previously I’m not one for a sweet morning meal. It arrived at my table on a plain white plate lightly drizzled with a sweet cinnamon syrup. About 1 ½” thick, and shot through with a cinnamon swirl, the single slice was almost large enough to stand as a meal on its own.
The texture was ideal, not soggy or dry, but instead perfectly soft and moist. It required no addition in the way of butter or syrup, only a fork and a mug of good coffee. The flavor echoes the interior of a cinnamon roll- sweet, spicy and butter-laden. Definitely worth the trip.
Amy’s is cozy in the winter and full of energy in the summer- all in all a great place to grab breakfast any day of the week.
Do any of you have a menu recommendation for someone interested in having lunch or dinner there?

And Papa Jake's doesn't make its patrons choose between a laid-back bar atmosphere and delicious, fresh food. Scott Leary, the new owner of Papa Jake’s Saloon on Elmwood, knows how to provide casual comfort and a very satisfying dining experience.
“We don’t take shortcuts here at Papa Jake’s,” Leary says. He proves this with Papa Jake’s fresh and tasty menu. “I don’t want to call this a late night menu, because we have amaz …
With the opening of more and more coffee houses downtown, some people wonder if Buffalo is really a coffee town. Buffalo is the original coffee town!
The "coffee break" which is taken for granted as a standard part of any work day has only been around for about a hundred years. Coffee culture has continued to flourish in this country and the espresso boom of the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s has seen to it that every other gas station in America now has a barista on staff. Perha …
It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Bar’s dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. We were happy to try a Sojitio, a sake mojito, which had the right amount of mint without too much sweetness.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven— …

amy's place is the best local breakfast value in the city...like you, i'm not a sweets person, especially at breakfast; just looking at the “L.A.” Cinnamon Toast hurts my teeth and brings on a sugar rush, but i'm sure my daughter would love it, i can hear her now, "extra syrup - on the side, please"

The eggplant dip with pita is phenomonal but my absolute favorite is the make your own pancakes. I get mine with bananas and chocolate chips. I don't know what they're putting in they're pancakes, but they are a whole lot better than any I could make. I like the varied tables and cups, I like how they play music, and I enjoy the eclectic make up of the patrons. But most of all I like the gammut of choices on the menu. And the pancakes.

I was discussing favorite Amy's dishes with two UB librarians recently; both love the wheatberry sandwich. I've never tried it, but on my last visit I had a fantastic vegetarian wrap that included french fries and hot sauce.
