Amaryllis Restaurant Springs to Life

Article by Amy Schlagter, originally published in the current Holiday issue of Buffalo Rising Magazine
In its many incarnations, the restaurant space in the lower level of the Westbrook Apartments has been everything from a tie-and-jacket fine dining favorite to a beer-and-burger sports bar. The beautiful new Amaryllis Restaurant is somewhere deliciously in between.
The new owners, Jen Stainrook and Matt Harrington are excited to share their love of food with Buffalo. Jen attended the California Culinary Academy and got her start in West Coast restaurants where the emphasis was on using fresh ingredients from local farmers. While working at Andreis French Restaurant, one of Las Vegasi finest, Jen learned how to use unique ingredients and elevated her technique. But the distance between her and her family in Buffalo was difficult so Jen returned to begin three years of work at Rue Franklin.
It was at that venerable Buffalo establishment where she met Matt, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. Like Jen, Matt had been learning alongside the best chefs in America: at internships in New York City and under a certified master chef in Houston.
The decision to open their own restaurant came from the pairis desire to create an innovative and comfortable dining experience. They take pride in using fresh, local products to inspire their seasonal menus. Jen and Mattis presence at Amaryllis ensures that customers will receive individual attention and information about the creative offerings.
On the fine dining level, Amaryllis serves excellent cuisine such as the seared Hudson Valley fois gras with grapefruit marmalade appetizer and the striped sea bass with coconut lime curry broth and eggplant chutney entrEe. iI will customize a menu to accommodate any dietary needs,i adds Jen. Yet there is a whole other side to the menu.
Amaryllis also serves a wonderful, more casual ibar menui including tuna sashimi appetizers and Lowline Angus burgers on homemade foccacia. The hand-cut fries with homemade spicy ketchup and mayo are a special treat, while the reasonable prices are the best surprise. The Carolina BBQ Pulled Pork is Mattis specialty. iWe smoke our own meats to ensure the flavor profile is not too sweet,i Matt explains. Residents of the Westbrook units above may use the bar menu as a sort of a iroom servicei so a great meal is just a phone call away.
The attention to detail evidenced by the kitchenis creations continues into the dining space dEcor. Camel colored suede chairs complement the original gleaming mahogany bar refurbished by Mattis talented father. From the candle-lit reception area to the custom-built wine rack to the contemporary local art on the walls, the entire space has been reborn with the love of quality that Jen and Matt envisioned for Amaryllis. iWe want to share what we have learned,i adds Matt, ito bring new life to dining in Buffalo.i

Before returning to Buffalo, I often wondered what new additions I had missed in our city’s restaurant and bar scene. So highly recommended by many of my closest friends, Jimmy’s on Elmwood, the old Buffalo Barbeque and Brew, was on the top of my to-do bar bite restaurant list.
It has recently been taken over by Jimmy Hambridge, who has been involved with the establishment since it’s opening as the Brew in October of 2006, actually a day before that horrible storm. The Ji …
It should come as no surprise to YUM readers, that I have a passion for spices. You can expect to find me foraging through the city’s ethnic markets, hunting for treasures with which to restock my spice cabinet. The more exotic the spices, the more excited I am to try them. And excited is exactly the way I felt when I first discovered zatar.
Not to be confused with Za’atar (which is a sort of hybrid of thyme-marjoram-oregano), zatar is a traditional Middle Eastern aromatic …
If you’re craving something sweet, you’ve picked the right time to do it. Starting on Monday, June 23rd, Choco-Logo Confectionery Design will be kicking off its annual summer sale. Choco-Logo, whose name is modeled after “Coca Cola,” was, up until recently, the only chocolate factory shop in downtown Buffalo that had captured the attention of people from all over Western New York.
Specializing in corporate gifts, custom logo chocolates and private label products, Choco- …
Italian restaurants are much loved here in Western New York. People from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds cherish the hearty, homestyle flavors of this Mediterranean cuisine. However, for the large group of immigrant and first-generation Italians here in Buffalo, several of the local Italian restaurants miss the mark.
With a mother from Calabria (southern Italy) and some training in the culinary arts, I fall into this category of disenchanted Italians yearning for tru …

I popped in two nights ago and what a find! A great hidden jewel!! I sat at the oversized wooden bar and struck up instant conversation with Christy, the friendly and knowledgeable bar tendress. I had some excellent wine (it was difficult to choose - the wine list is quite nice) and an incredible risotto from the bar menu (again, offering many excellent options). I'm looking forward to a full course meal soon. I met the owners and wait staff, along with a few other happy patrons and had a great time. This place is a perfect blend of friendly sophistication - very Buffalo!!

When you walk into a place, Coltrane's playing, there's good lighting, a great staff serving wonderful food to you and your friends, what else could you possibly want?
My new favorite place!

I live at the Westbrook, and I'm a "frequent flyer" at the Amaryllis! The food's great, the atmosphere is soothing, the starff are friendly and the music's great. It's a perfect place to enjoy a romantic dinner, have a night out with friends, or just have a drink and unwind.
See you there!
