Allentown Idea Center: Mission and Purpose
To create, manage and sustain an agenda for the Allentown community that deals with strengthening the quality of life in this particular neighborhood. The group will focus on any issues and concerns that affect the well-being of those of us who live and work here. Included among those concerns are:
l. Public Spaces: What can we do to improve the quality of our public places and spaces? 2. The Arts: Drawing on the success of last yearis iInfringement Festivali, what can we do to strengthen the role and the function of the artists who live and work in our community? 3. Social Justice: What steps can we take to improve the relations between and among the different income and social classes that exist within our community. How can we help the indigent members of our community become more productive and less threatening? 4. External affairs: What kinds of links and connections, physical or programmatic, could and/or should be established and sustained with surrounding neighborhoods? 5. Communication: How can we best communicate the excitement that we feel about our community to the rest of the city?
Meetings are at 5:30 pm on the first and last Wednesday of every month at The Hardware CafE at 245 Allen Street where the proprietor provides the refreshments. See you there on Wednesday.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

Regarding #2, I'd like to see a monthly year round gallery walk a la Portland (description below pasted from a website):
First Thursday Gallery Walk
One of the best times to explore Portlandis galleries is on the first Thursday of every month during the aptly named iFirst Thursday Gallery Walk.i On these nights, galleries and shops in Portlandis Old Town, Pearl District and downtown neighborhoods stay open late, inviting the public to mingle with the artists and explore the cityis rich art scene. The streets are abuzz with performers, sidewalk artists and enthusiastic crowds. Most art dealers use First Thursday to stage new exhibitions and artist receptions.
Last Thursday
Complementing First Thursday is Northeast Alberta Streetis iLast Thursdayi art walk, which falls on the last Thursday evening of each month. This relatively new enclave of galleries (see iUrban Mosaic Section: Albertai) includes Guardino Gallery, Talisman Gallery, Jackson Art and Bohio Studio. Myriad restaurants, shops and cafes are other assets of this vibrant street.
This would be the pefect way to showcase Allentown's artists, galleries, shops, restaurants and music. It would pull people in from all over WNY, helping Buffalo financially as well as culturally and communally. It's a win-win for everyone.
These events are amazingly fun (paricularly in the summer months) and hugely successful - we can do it in Allentown!
