Allentown Arts 2007: Gotta Have It Number 1!

The 50th Anniversary of the 2007 Allentown Arts Festival is well underway, bringing crowds to the streets of Buffalo to celebrate the Arts (and of course, good food). Buffalo Rising was out early, and we're going to be providing you with a series of predictions to what this year's "must have" item is going to be, as well as highlighting some of the more unusual and beautiful items to be found. This post will feature vendors found South of Allen Street. It's a little early to see what everyone is carrying around this year, but we found a few items that were certainly worthy of attention. Just a note, this isn't to say what the "best" art at the Festival is -- just a guessing game about what the most popular item for sale this year will be. What's your vote?
First up were a collection of hanging garden ornaments, unique with quirky faces., These could be a great addition to late a summer garden, overgrown and looking as if it were part of the very trees.

Next were a series of glass flowers by artist Philip Austin. The detail on the centers of these flowers, about 4 inches long, and meant to be spiked into flowerbeds or pots, was amazing.
Also spotted was a collection of "garden sticks" by JoAnn Rawley, shown holding anything from candies (cute for a party) to birdseed.
Next is a variation on the traditional garden crook, this time used to coil up garden hose, by Anthony Arkus:
A perennial favorite, the Miller Genuine Light airplane:
Terry Weaver brought a lovely collection of blown glass hanging vases.
But here's my vote for Round 1. It's a tripod variation on a hanging ornament, additionally with a green element, reusing insulators as candle holders.
Cute, at the right price point, and we even caught an early buyer!
So have fun, wear your sunblock, and look for more coverage right here!

Though it may only be the fifth time since 1992 that the Albright-Knox Art Galley has increased its admission rate, the higher fee speaks to the changing face of our society and economy. To keep the gallery in good financial health, it is necessary to increase the price of a regular adult admission ticket from $10 up to $12. The new price will go into effect on January 1st 2009.
The director of the gallery, Louis Grachos, has said that due to higher costs in all areas of the gall …
French satire from the 1600's feels like falling asleep in high school english class. But classic French satire with a rock and roll band? That sounds better. We can thank Andy Liegl for this bold modernity on December 26th when his production of Such Foolish Affected Ladies opens at the Alt Theatre. The original play calls for violinists but this role has been liberally opened up to local band The Nepenthe. "I wanted an indie rock sound, something that my generation can click wit …
It’s funny how history seems to repeat itself. What could be more perfect to spread the news about local artists at the Buffalo Indie Market than a literary magazine that features works from local artists? Wow... look at all the fine arts. OK, someone explain to me why they pass themselves off as a fine arts festival and used that as an excuse to drive a worthy charity event out of the neighborhood? Buffalo's biggest craft show, starring drunk suburbanites pissing in my driveway all night long. Woo hoo!

May I suggest that everyone check out the art work of . a very talented artist friend of mine ( who is really struggling) He is trying to launch some of his SAND ART artwork at a tiny art gallery that a friend of his owns during this Art Festival. The art gallery is on Main street at the corner of Main and Allen streets. The artist, Mathew Saemenes creates striking pieces that have allot of emotion in them (in my opinion). I know he puts his heart and soul into each peace. I hope a few of you out there will stop by to check his work out during the art festival (or anytime).

kelly, you are soooooooo right. Roby's event sure provided a great deal more for aspiring young musicians than the money distributed for scholarships by this event. It's a sad state of affairs - and from the pics, it looks like the same vendors this year as in the past.
BUT - my bet is the shepard's crook plant stand and the tri-poled rust effect yard doo-dad (like the one the guyin the last pic is holding - again - this year. I got mine at local garden stores. (See I made sure I responded to the original post.)
If you're out and about tomorrow - don't forget to get over to the West Village Flea Market - opens at 9 am - about 18 - 20 vendors or so and includes a jewelry/ring maker, antique dealer, and stuff for everyone - even power tools just in time for father's day. WOW - Grabrielle- your right, those blown glass garden sticks are stunning! I will enjoy going down there to check it out - except for one thing----- May I make a plea that people keep their pets at home this year (even though it is a little bit cooler this year). I think it is so unfair to the animals to bring your dog to these sweltering packed events!! I don't really believe the pets enjoy it either. The animals are usually walking on boiling payments and being trampled on. Can't festival organizers request that people not bring pets to these functions?

Here's your big chance folks to buy overpriced garage sale goods. Antler walking stick? Check. Wood carved faces? Check. Cheap homemade jewelry? Check. Fine arts? Not so fast. Trying to pass this CRAFT FAIR of as a fine arts festival is a joke.
Did you know? ...The wonderful Allentown Village Society and their knee high socks continue to keep local artists from peddling their wares outside their own businesses. Why? because it is more important to the AVS for an "artist" from Sandusky to sell their sailboat watercolor paintings rather than support the local businesses that are already in place. Local businesses along the "festival route" are forced to keep their goods inside their businesses due to a 1979 ruling in favor of the AVS.
Check out today's Buffalo News article (http://www.buffalonews.com/entertainment/story/94061.html) for some more boneheaded moves from the AVS. Shame on you.

Read the news article - Hitlerish. How any organozation can prevent businesses that contribute every day of the business week from getting a lift up is almost grotesque. We need to support local busines and these businesses should reap the benefit from the crowd for this event. As well, shame on the city for their lack of support for a young man that could have easily stayed in LA, where he has a successful business, like many others who had to move away during those lean times. Instead Roby came back, to start a business, contribute to the economic climate and notoriety of the city, start a foundation for kids that have lost their ability to have music classes due to budget cuts and poor overall economic growth. And he gets the crap. Nice way to say Thank You, City Hall Administration. One thing that always impressed me about Roby's event - he always had room for community and nonprofit organizations, he created an awareness of services not known to everyone, and his crowd ages ranged from infant to 80+ without incident. From the Irish dancers to punk and metal, from watercolors to high end grafitti, MIA presented it all - and that's FINE art.

AVS=Allentown Village Society, the people who run the art festival
(and once again, not disappointed by the behavior of the visitors. Hearing the guys who run the shop below my apartment shouting at someone not to throw their trash on the ground in front of our building, saying "hey, this is my business, and people live here!" only made me wonder how many we wouldn't catch.)
My friends and I were happy to give our business to the Allen West festival, and even then only to those with a 716 area code on their business cards. With Music Is Art being driven away we don't even have to cut through the main festival anymore. Instead we spent the time sitting in the shade of Day's Park enjoying the warm afternoon.

I agree with MRodgers - it's really become a craft show.
And can you believe that someone brought their cat on a harhness to the fesitval!. As I walked by I saw the cat dug deep under a table shaking all over. His owner and some others were trying to dig her out but she was too frightened. I said to the owner, " You must have a special cat because most cats would be terrified and overwhelmed in a situation like this". He replied with, " she is terrifed that's why she's hiding down there". Well, that says it all. What are these people thinking? Shame on the festival for not banning animals. You know it's funny- they ban artists from putting out signs and displaying their work, etc (unless they have the Allentown Assoc. approval) - but they don't ban animals (who don't want to be there at all)!

hmmm, parkstreetwoman, although I'm an anti-AVS, I guess the event shoudl carry on as it is an important one for Buffalo. HOWEVER: Here's my suggestion, there's plenty of parking lots all around the area - provide residential parking to the surrounding small streets during that weekend. That way people can continue on with their needs and schedules without having to be "displaced" for a weekend.
AND, Lucia has an excellent point - the AVS should certainly ban pets from the festival. The Allen-West compnent is much smaller in size and geography, so pets could attend with their owners - less time for them to have to tolerate the heat and crowds. BTW - thanks for coming by yesterday, Lucia.

Direct from the City Ordinances:
§ 78-18. Running at large; special events. B. Special events. (1) Notwithstanding Subsection A, no person shall bring a dog, either leashed or unleashed, to a special event held on municipal property. The owner of the dog or the owner of record shall be held liable for a violation of this subsection. (2) For the purposes of this Subsection B, a "special event" includes all entertainments, exhibitions or performances described in Chapter 75 and other events on municipal property which require a permit or permission of the City of Buffalo or the Buffalo Board of Education. (3) For the purposes of this subsection, "municipal property" means all property owned by the City of Buffalo or the Buffalo Board of Education, including but not limited to parks, playgrounds and public streets.
Seems pretty clear that there should be no dogs at these events. Now if there were only somebody there enforcing it!

Wow! Can we stop with the bitching fest going on here. All you people are doing is complaining on how terrible things went. I attended both days and had a great time. I supported local business; I had a drink at Founding Fathers, I ate lunch at the Towne Restaurant, and I bought something from the Antique Man. From what I saw all weekend, people seemed to be enjoying themselves. If you want to have a "fine arts only" festival, I'd find it hard to believe that many people would attend. I dont know about you, but I dont have an extra $600.00 to spend on a painting. I do have an extra $50.00 to spend on a couple of nice photos or prints, or cute garden landscape elements.

and another thing... This Allentown West festival you are talking about does not register with people who have never heard of it. Balth, I agree, and I didn't mean to sound bitchy. I went to the festival (both of them!) both days, and made several purchases that I am VERY pleased with. And I will confess, I took my dog who had a great time (I believe) greeting people. I enjoy the Festival, and don't know why people bitch that it's not high art. It's not -- so what? What are they expecting. Let me add that I spent two hours on Allen Street last night cleaning up trash with other volunteers. I picked up everything from a dirty diaper, a shoe, mounds of unpopped pop corn (I had to risk my life fighting off the sea gulls to do it!) and what seemed like thousands of bottles. And I think it was worth it.

right on martin. psw: why would you take your dog to this thing; to impress others? do you really believe that a dog enjoys all the people and the heat from the street? who knew that the city had an ordinance barring dog owners from dragging their dogs down the street during festivals? chalk up another law the police won't enforce. and, to echo what kelly said: last night and this morning while walking my dogs, noticed far more trash and bottles than usual. maybe us city residents should invade some street in amherst and dump our ashtrays and garbage on their lawns?????

I was trying to figure out what psw means -- I thought it was some instant message abbeviation -- then I realized you meant me! Do I take my dog to impress people? No, not at all. I pretty much just walked him around the neighborhood, like I do several times every day, and as he is a very well socialized dog (which is a good thing, by the way -- dogs should be able to be around large groups of people and other dogs without going ballistic) he seems to me to enjoy it. Then he goes home, has a drink of water and a nap, and then he goes and stands by the door with his leash, ready to hit the streets again.

And regarding the trash issue, I think Allentown is always very dirty, and people on this site have called me every kind of idiot for saying so. Quite honestly, I would say that most of the litter I picked up last night was a.) trash left behind by vendors, b.) gross overflow from trash cans, and c.) bar trash. The bar trash was the worst, in my opinion, becasue it seems to me that the bar owners and patrons should be responsible for that clean up chore.

I absoloutley hate the negativity with this blog...Lucia for you pointing out the negative, why not give us an alternative that is positive...quit your bitching. As for the dogs...I took my puppy to get him some socialization with other people and he is training for a service dog. It wasn't too hot for them at all, nor did he get in anyone's way. I did like however having a 13 year old woman and her mother comment on it right in front of mye how disgusted they were that I had him out...as if I couldn't hear them. First of all, i must have not realized that everyone in allentown speaks canine and they know what dogs like. some animals like the involvement with people...so shut the hell up when it comnes to something that is not yours. You can bitch about teh Allentown association asting in a gustapo fashion...yet you are all doing teh same freaking thing! Let people do thier own thing. If you want to stretch the issue, why don't we also ban strollers and little children. One could argue the heat is too much for them as well, not to mention that strollers don't exactly fit in the large cxrowds too well. But no, we find that wrong to ban little children, so lets bitch about the dog owners. As for the smoking, I am also a smoker and I love it! I probably smoked a whole pack while walking around and blew my smoke up and but all my butts in the garbage cans all the time, in fact I even picked up some that weren't mine to throw out. Once again, this is another choice that we all have and ifyou don't like a person smoking then walk somewhere else...the streets are at least 20 feet wide! Give me a break, I live in Allentown and absolutely hate the pretentious people that always bitch and push their beliefs on others. In honor of you, next year, I will walk both of my dogs and smoke shitloads of cigs. You all who have something to say about others actions, spend some time figuring yourself out and let us walk our dogs if we want and smoke till we die! It is our choice! I will not tell you how to dress or raise your children so don't tell me how to raise my dog...lwhich is probably smarter than your little shitpots anyways....peace

I literally have had to run out of my house when seeing people empty their ashtrays or throw fast food wrappings on my lawn, and those folks seem genuinely surprised that I care or am saying anything; then they ignore my request to pick up their trash and curse me; city of good neighbors indeed!!. Euclidian: i also was making comments so people w/ dogs could hear them b/c your dog can't talk so I will. You probably were the guy dragging his brown lab down the street w/ his tongue scraping the pavement. hell, if your dog likes the "involvment" of people, why don't you drive him/her to the mall and leave him/her in the car; I'm sure he/she would enjoy that too. other than that, i will sleep soundly knowing that another "great" pet owner will die soon because he has chosen to smoke cigs. by the by: I actually do like the idea of banning strollers...

Plain n' simple, the dog attendance at the festival is totally out of control. WRUS said it all with his review of the city law! I agree, most people - especially if they have puppies - love to show n' tell their dogs around as a weak attempt to receive attention. I wish the SPCA or PETA or Michael Vick or someone would come out a few days before the festival and tell people to leave their dogs at home. I think it's too bad the report focused on stuff like the garden tripod and totally ignored the artists and fine artisans who make up 90% of this show. I think it's too bad some people think the Allen West Festival...not juried and filled with imports...should get their money instead of the original show because somehow Robbie Takac's clumsy attempt at bringing his festival in on the absolutely wrong weekend turned an art show with a 50 year tradition into some sort of joke to the cool kids. I think it's too bad that even an event as positive and fun and rooted in Summer tradition as Allentown Art Festival gets the ubiquitous slam at all things Buffalo. Sooo predictable. It was not an unusually hot day and most of the dogs I saw were having a fine time. I am more concerned for the babies strapped into strollers, crying and bored. Do parents really think their little ones like this sort of thing? My beef, as a participant, was the annoying over-amplified voice of the MC at the Seigel Kelleher party droning on and on. You could hear him all the way to Allen. Rude. By the way.. there are some very good people who show at Allen West, either by choice or because they aren't able to get into the main show. There is also lots of junk. They do not jury in the people, it is striclty pay and show up. Sell what you want. If that is the Festival you choose to support, be aware. Allentown is a highly regarded show in the "industry" I am proud to have it in my city and in my neighborhood.

Good for you, ArtGypsy, the juried show is an important one for Buffalo, but the show, itself, is not FINE art as evidenced by the tripods, shepard's hooks, multi-colored plastic wind catchers and other paraphenalia sold that is mass produced in factories.
As far as Roby's event, I felt it added to the festival and produced some FINE art as fine Art includes music and dance. From the Rince Na Tiarna Dancers to Ballet, African American Cultural Center performances, rock, pop, folk, and more, this event provided a glimpse into other performing arts and complimented the whole scene. It also spawned an incredible organization that continues to promote youth activities in music and provides a chance for our young people to experience various programs in music recording, production, and even promotion. This "clumsy attempt" as you call it, has produced more effort in four or five short years and has also created new partnerships that include UB, Albright-Knox, and others. If that's clumsy, then I'd hate to see what you would term the efforts of the AVS and their scholarship program. And, don't forget, if Mary M. Myszkiewicz, the president of this organization, hadn't made the incredulous statement that Music was not art, MIA would not have had their name!
I guess I like the Allen West Fest most because it's inclusive and adds spice to the program. Street vendors, street musicians, and more. And, whether fortunate or not, it's invisibility, as far as it being a separate entity from Allentown, just adds to the interest of the whole effort - this could have been the result if the AVS would have partnered more readily with MIA.
But, I guess we can agree to disagree.

ArtGypsy...the Festival was a joke with a lot of people due to past actions, WAY before Robby Takac came along...not just the young people...the fest had beefs with Allentown businesses 'round 1980, they tried to beat down Allen West 7-8 years ago, of course the MIA event (which did not detract from the AAF at all!!!)...the festival organizers a few years ago threaten to move the event to Amherst...so, as you can see, the Festival folks have a tradition of rubbing people the wrong way.

Let me explain this all from an exhibitors viewpoint. . A lot of things that the people don't like about AAF are the very things that bring in artists and craftsmen from all over the country. We pay $200 just to pitch the tent. We have to send slides of our work for a panel of artists to review and they decide who gets in. That costs money, too. We cannot sell anything that is not "juried in". The organizers review each day of the show to make sure you don't slip something in. If they don't like what they see, you have to remove it. So, after all that, if a bunch of stores set up sidewalk sales right behind us, selling things we cannot, at prices that undersell us..think about it. How would you feel? when AVS tells shop owners not to set up outside, that is why. It feels wrong, I know. But these things keep good people applying to the show.We do this as a profession, not a hobby. Every festival that attaches itself to the main event takes money away from us. We are all fighting for the same dollar. I think Allen West is fun, too. But if attendees are spending money on Peruvian ponchos, they are not buying art and craft. If they are not buying art and craft, the folks that are really good at that stop applying. Simple. And that's when the show starts to slip. AVS people are trying to keep the integrity of the show alive against a lot of odds. MIA is a great idea. Why it has to be the same weekend escapes me. Franklin Street went from the "arty" street to the party street when MIA happened and artists dropped out. That's just the way it is. I'm sorry that so many people don't stand up for AVS on this. Remember that the 1st year, Robbie plopped that thing down on them with 6 weeks warning and artists had to be moved and plans that had been hammered out over a year's time were trashed.(that's what I meant by "clumsy") I don't remember anyone feeling bad for AVS. I don't know if this will illuminate anything for anyone, but sometimes knowing what it's like on the other end of things helps. Oh...and the "shepherd hook" thing? Many an iron worker/blacksmith makes a bunch of those to help meet expenses because it's hard to sell an intricate, beautiful thing for $500 and having lower priced things in your booth helps put food on the table. Nothing wrong with that. I couldn't make one, could you? I hope AVS keeps "rubbing people the wrong way" because there are precious few quality shows left. I truly understand the concept of several shows co-existing for the enjoyment of the community. I think MIA is a great idea. I love Allen West, too. As a participant, though, I wish they weren't there. Sorry. That doesn't make me a snob or whatever. I'm just telling it like it is from a business standpoint.

AVS should hire ArtGypsy as a spokesman; that's by far the most rational explanation of their actions I've heard. I don't entirely agree with it, but it's going in the right direction.
Let's face it, AVS is its own worst enemy when it comes to public relations. I bet none of the critical comments about "Fine Art" wouldn't have been made if it weren't for Mary M. invoking those words as she gleefully ran Robby out of town. Most of the art/craft at AAF is very good and displays a high level of artistic or craft talent, but it only begs criticism to crow about it all as "Fine Art." Some of it probably is, but copper lawn ornaments and planes made out of beer cans are not.
People might also cut AVS more slack if they didn't seem to go out of their way to act as though the community in which it takes place is devoid of other residents and businesses. A little more outreach about what AAF wants to do and why would go a long way to appeasing people's complaints.
I hope everyone can lighten up a bit in the future and take the event for what it is, instead of trying to make it out to be more than it is on the one hand, or blowing it out of the water on the other.
