World On The Streets Of North Buffalo

It's going to be strange not having New World Record on the avenue. I guess it's time to see them off to their next location. The latest New World Propaganda News Letter is out, and with it is an invitation from the gang to join them this Saturday for a moving party and sale. Still no word on what's moving into the space... dead silence as a matter of fact. Obviously the interested parties (if there are any) are keeping hush-hush. Not even the New World gang has heard any whispers. So... that just means that we'll concentrate on supporting New World for one last time in their current location, before following them over to the corner of Hertel and Delaware. Here's the invitation from New World:
"Parting is such sweet sorrow . . . . but partying is a whole other ballgame. Saturday, September 30 will be our last day at 765 Elmwood, and we want to go out with a bang. Head down to the store for our Going Away Party and Sale – take 10% off everything in the store (sorry no discount on tickets & gift certificates), and take advantage of your last chance to pick up a coupon for our new location. We'll be open from 10am to 9pm, and we'll have surprises and goodies too.
Are you wondering what we did with the big metal sign over the Elmwood store? The answer to this and other mysteries will be revealed on Tuesday, October 2 at 2304 Delaware (at Hertel). We'll be open at the new location on Tuesday, with an armload of new releases, swanky new digs, a bunch of surprises, and caffeine to help us cope with the exhaustion from moving over the weekend. Join us and join the fun!"

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

they obviously know what's best for their business, but selfishly speaking as an EV resident, they don't belong in a strip mall that you need to drive to -- record stores aren't generally destinations anymore and I think they will lose business by not being located in a pedestrian-friendly environment. Most of the CDs that I purchased at NWR were when I was at Spot and wandered in to browse - a completely impulse purchase. I don't see this happening at their new location. Perhaps another record shop will move into their old digs...it was a perfect fit with SPOT..

I've heard some whispers about what's moving in. Can't say, though. :)

Despite the vacany this leaves on Elmwood, I believe this is a very good move. Not only does it allow for the business to grow, but it is also another piece of the puzzle in the Hertel Ave resurgence. I personally would have loved to see them locate somewhere closer to Main St (Parker Hertel Pharmacy location) but the parking issue is understandable. As for Elmwood - let's all hope this location attracts an out-of-town business or at the very least a move from the suburbs.
I was thinking this would be a great location for a Men's Wearhouse or something similar to cater to the budding and future professionals in the area. Anyone care to enlighten me as to who in this area currently serves the market? Thanks!

hey Rayzor,
i dont have to drive there!!
but i admit, strip mall is not the coolest place. although, this particular one is getting a pseudo-storefront makeover which is a marked improvement over what the bldg usta look like. not great, but a little better. if anything, i miss their previous elmwood location.
and i cant believe that the hertel parker pharmacy has been vacant as long as it has. what the hell! if i recall it was pretty cheap. if i remember, something like 240 for 4 storefronts & billboard. cant beat that! and its across from hertel parker liquer as well as some of the better mexican food in the city.

I live right by the Parker-Hertel Pharmacy and have spoken with the guy who just bought the building. He's doing a lot of work to the inside and is actively looking for tenants. He seems like a great person who's really committed to having some good mixed use tenants in the building (don't anyone freak out, Checkers isn't going anywhere).

I am still confused. What is this place called a record store? I am unfamiliar with such a concept. Do people actually leave their homes to buy music? Such an odd activity

You are so funny :)
My son is 17 and ONLY buys vinyl and has no use for an iPod and doesn't buy c.d.'s either... New World Record has limited vinyl so he mostly shops at the Record Baron in Kenmore. Independant record and book stores are definately endangered and if we want them to LIVE, we need to $upport them...WHEREVER they are located.

Ah Checkers! Our favorite hole in the wall! I must admit I used to be a frequent patron. I remember standing outside having a smoke and thinking how great it would be if they expanded next door. Though in a pool table, another dart board, and... for god's sake... build a new bathroom. Something about the smell of vomit, urine and mothballs keeps me from visiting very often now. So much potential for a place with so much North Buffalo history.
As for New World - Is the Kmart behind the plaza still open? Been so long since I even looked in that direction. Would be nice to see that building leveled and some development put up near the street. Granted every area needs a discount retailer - and the longer Walmart stays out of the area the better - but it is such an eye soar.

If I have to drive to a record (media) store, it's going to be borders. I went to NWR because they were local and within walking distance. Now that my choices are north buffalo in a strip mall or the suburbs in a strip mall, I'll take the one with 25% off coupons and a coffee bar inside.

tudorguy,
You and the other village idiots ought to stop acting so childish. By your logic, everyone in North Buffalo should avoid going to Abraham's Jewelers, Homeward Bound and Pavlov's Togs since all were originally located in North Buffalo. It's depressing to read all the selfish self-centered commenters who will no longer go to NWR because it's no longer on Elmwood. If your attitude were shared by everyone who shops on Elmwood, it would not be as successful as it is today.

there is a sad truth to tudorguy's comments, I know a lot of people that once they have to get into their car they are going to go out to the burbs to do their shopping because 5 miles or 20 miles in a car doesn't make a difference and in the end the larger national chains offer the cheaper prices.
I am in no way supportive of this but it is s viewpoint that many if not most people in the county have. Go to the Target on th eboulevard any day of the week and look at all the commerce going on around you and then think about all the retail centers around the county you realize that we spend a $hit load of money every day around here but Buffalo doesn't capture much of it at all because it isn't cheap.
The sad truth is American's will screw their neighbor to save a dime. Good luck NWR I think you are going to need it.

sbrof,
The sad truth is that there are village idiots posting on BRO who need other Buffalo/WNY residents to go out of their way to support their cherished local stores yet won't do the same in return. Your apologist response lends implicit legitimacy to that obnoxious EV attitude. I wouldn't be surprised if these are the same idiots who gleefully denigrate suburbanite shoppers for driving to chains or malls that are convenient for them, but do the same thing when facing a decision of whether to drive to support an off-Elmwood local business or a chain. Hypocrites. The villiage idiot motto must be "Think Local. Buy Local (except if not on Elmwood)". However, Tudor guy would rather drive approx. 8-13 miles to a Borders from Auburn/Elmwood Ave than 2 1/2 miles to NWR's new location. Pathetic.

I hate that plaza, it's difficult to turn into.........I always walk to NWR and I don't see myself going there ever again once it relocates. If I have to get in my car to get a CD than I might as well save the $5 and go to Best Buy. It's a shame to lose this Elmwood staple

With the price of gasoline driving out of your neighborhood to save a dollar or two is pretty foolish. Tripping over dollars to pick up pennys at the expense of your neighborhoods economy seems pretty lame. People need to walk more anyways. Let Amherst turn into a giant strip mall, I would rather live here at this point in my life. And I will support local a record store whenever I can but I'll admit the big guys can be more convienent at times. If something is on my way home I would still patronize it but I would not leave this city specifically because a CD (anything for that matter) is a little bit cheaper at a bigger store.

Holy cow! How do these discussion devolve so quickly. As many of us pointed out in a previous article about this move, it has NOTHING to do with not wanting to patronize Hertel because Elmwood is superior or any of that childish trash BuffaloRox and others are assuming. It's a simple matter of commodities.
I frequented NWR because, to put it simply, it was next to my coffee shop. If I want to save a few bucks I would shop at the 20 or so big boxes I drive by everyday on my way home from work. If I have to drive to NWR, I might as well stop at Best Buy, or for that matter Record Theater, and save a few bucks. Or better yet I can save time and money by ordering online.
What many of us "EV Snobs" are saying is that NWR got our buisiness because of the convienience of it's location. they are not positioned in the market place as a pricing leader or by having a wide selection. CD's are commodities, a CD from Borders is the same as a CD from NWR. Many of us will not get into a car to drive to Hertel when we have cheaper, more convienient options.
Now to that end, the residents of North Buffalo now have a good record store that they can frequent on foot, and I hope they do. NWR deserves your buisiness. But as many of have pointed out, the foot traffic that NWR recieved next to spot will be hard to replicate in the strip plaza. Record stores are not destinations anymore. I honestly wish NWR the best, but I will frequent it far less now because it has become inconvienient, not because I refuse to shop outside of my perfect and superior little Elmwood Village.|

jerkface,
I understand that impulse buys occurred from some while waiting at Spot or walking along Elmwood (that have nothing to do with visions of a perfect and superior little Elmwood Village). No doubt many people who live in EV shopped at NWR because it was next to Spot or along the way as they were walking to a restaurant or other store. What I find ridiculous are people who are never again going to NWR simply because it moved off Elmwood. Re-read the thread on the original BRO post announcing the move. People have made this point. Everyday, people who don't live nearby shop on Elmwood when it would be more convenient or cheaper to do so elsewhere and it isn't because the store they are visiting is some super destination. I find it a bit hypocritical that the "shop local" mantra strongly espoused in EV is so quickly disregarded when a matter of convenience.
