Action In Allentown: Rick Cycle & East End Team Up

Rick Cycle, a business with a very large following, appeared to outgrow its store on Main Street many years ago. Anyone who has patronized the shop can tell you that navigating the rows of bikes and merchandise can be difficult at times. The move to Allen Street will definitely give some added exposure, and the move will come in time to avoid the Main Street tear-up as that 700 block becomes a two way stretch. I spoke with Tom Azzarella, owner of Rick Cycle, who is jazzed about the move. “I’ve been looking around for quite some time. We were contacted about the space and decided that the exposure on Allen would increase our business. That space is a lot bigger, both for the front displays and the back where we work on the bikes. We’ve been in business for 110 years and are proud to say that we’re the second oldest bike shop in the country.”
Both businesses are scheduled to open up in their new diggs this coming April.

Maybe you read about this one last December, or maybe you took the time and looked over this one in April, and perhaps you considered attending this event back in June. Whatever your reasoning for putting it off, there’s no time like the present for Forgotten Buffalo, unless of course it’s the past.
Forgotten Buffalo Tours take participants on a journey into the history of the area, always striving to produce a unique and entertaining outing. Their success has allowed them to …
Last evening was the first time that I have ever attended the event, Party for the Parks held at the Marcy Casino. The parks gala started up just as the Burchfield-Penney showing was winding down, and has happened more than a few times this summer, the non-stop rain kept everyone guessing. By guessing, I mean that every time the band members would even look at their instruments the rain would start to fall. It was a good thing that the upper terrace was covered and the Marcy Casin …
According to Miguel Santos, one of the founders of the Puerto Rican Day Parade of WNY, starting the parade six years ago was a way of “recognizing that Buffalo’s Latino population continues to grow and we decided that it would be a great way to recognize this segment of the population.” Inspired by the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in NYC, Santos, who is a local activist in the Latino community, got a call from Jose Rodriguez, and the rest is history.
Santos says, “We …
For the first time in over a hundred years, Buffalo has unveiled a brand new ($33,000,000, 84,000 sq.’) museum. Yesterday, hundreds of people met at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center to witness, not one, but three, ribbon cuttings. Fans and supporters were greeted by trumpeting didgeridoos as they walked into the vaulting entranceway – a walk that led them past the museum café, the gift shop, the learning center, a conference center, studios, gallery spaces, and more gallery s …

Rick's Cycle shop rocks, they get it done right, for a reasonable price and fast. They will be a great addition to A-town and benefit from the exposure. Main Street is so cold and off the beaten path. Cycling season shall be here in no time!

I guess I should get a bike soon -- I could do so much better on gas, by riding a bike and I'd get some exercise --- any suggestions Rick Cycle vs. Schicklona on Hertel? Price, selection, etc....?

Joshua, Cycling is definitely the way to go. I'd recommend going to those two shops, and Campus Wheelworks on Elmwood, and look around and chat with the people here. I've never been to Schicklona, but Rick and Campus have quite different feels to them. You may like one better than the rest.

ten speeds & teasing combs, sounds like a match made in heaven! i like the names permanent sprockets, or handle bar moustache.......

Well, those businesses made a good move, believe it or not. If they move when they are doing well, then they will continue to do well. Those business store fronts will get filled after or while construction goes on. Businesses got killed on Main St. when the subway originally was installed. Their move is a good move to stay in business - they can always move back if they choose.

Very glad to see the Neo space filled up this soon. That section of Allen onward to Main is teatering and couldn't afford to see that space stay vacant.

Damn you icecreamsub, i tried for 10 minutes to work 'banana seat' into my post!
Forgive me, but you missed a golden opportunity to work a 'sissy bar' into your mechanical word smithing.
(and nonono madame editrix. that was not a 'homophonic epaulet' it is a legitimately genuine bicycle part, no matter what neighborhood you park it in).

Whatever their location, they're still in the business of selling bicycles, which is a vulgar and distasteful trade for a city of Buffalo's bearing and stature. So be wary, my friends of these filthy bike peddlers setting up their disreputable "shop" in your pristine, leafy neighborhood. And remember the excellent lines offered this year by Ford and General Motors. Call a dealer near you.

Strictly GED baby, and damn ! I mean really, 'bike shop', 'sissy bar', 'pedal pusher'.........you gotta pay for this sheet in comedy club, and there is no drink minimum in here.

Perry,
it will not only be a wonderful addition to the street scrape, it will be a metaphorically geographic dividing line between the shoppers, and the shop lifters! commerce and crud. vibrance and vagrancy. pugg walkers and puppy killers. ascots & aZcracks. sandras and sandraquas.
my melting pot run'eth over.

Seems like a nice fit to me. I would rather see some new business enter the city but living in Allentown I'll take what I can get. Now if only we could get a coffee shop over here with good hours. Say open early and stay open past 6pm. Anyone know of anything like that in A Town?

Mariner, with the new neighbor, maybe Leon at Cafe 59 will look at his hours. It may not be everything you want in a coffee shop, but give the guy some credit for changing his business to meet the needs of the neighborhood.

Brilliant move for Rick! Bikes and pedestrians own Allentown, (I have to chuckle every time I see a Yukon SUV try to squeeze down Allen, 'they must not be from around here')
I keep meaning to take my Dahon folding bike in for some repairs, this location will be much more convenient for me and many others.

Great news, much better location! Nice addition to Allen, hopefully they can expand their inventory of common cycling accessories with the additional square footage. From past experience if you need any specific MTB gear they can special order jsut about anything; only exception being banana seats now that they have been banned by NORBA:)

Another victim of Main street one of the places i shopped in Buffalo Ricks cycle shop is gone from Mains street and it was on the 700 block a victim of the city not getting moving fast enough to save main street. I don't know what its going to take, especially the 700 block should have been open a long time ago... its just sad!
