A Toast To Buffalo's Super Heroes and Army Girls

This year I had my parade favorites, as I always do. Usually I'm partial to the floats (or trucks) where throngs of people dress up and party. On Sunday I got a big kick out of the Buffalo Bears who dressed up as super heroes (see photo). They each had a comic bubble on a stick broadcasting different sayings. The super hero characters were animated and interacted well with the crowd. It goes without saying that the Roxy's Army girls are a hi-light for me on parade Sunday as well. They too are super animated and get the crowd all riled up. Everyone had their favorites - whether it was the awesome winding dragon or the inspiring rogue drummer... and that's where the fun starts... the festival winds up with a massive party and live performances all along Bidwell Parkway. Once again, a pat on the back to everyone who helps to make this parade possible.

If you are like many potential college students in the area looking for a college where professors know you by your name and not a number, there may be one college that you are overlooking – Trocaire College.
Trocaire is a private, two-year college nestled in a south Buffalo neighborhood that specializes in health-care related careers. The college opened its doors in 1958 and is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Known for producing above-average graduates i …
New urban entertainment projects in Kansas City and St. Louis are dwarfed by the colossal project planned in Sacramento. The Railyards will transform the historic Union Pacific railyard property adjacent to downtown Sacramento into a dynamic urban environment. To be constructed over the next 20 to 30 years, the 240-acre site will be integrated into the fabric of the existing central city. Housing, entertainment, cafes, retail stores, cultural uses, parks and office space is pla …
Columbus Park could be one of the most underutilized parks in Buffalo. It also has a ton of untapped potential. There are bike trails and walkways leading through the heart of it as well as a ton of old growth trees. I’m sure that the park is used by the neighbors, but unlike parks like Johnson, Days, etc., I rarely see activities and events taking place there. As a matter of fact, I don’t recall ever seeing an event or gathering at Columbus Park.
Last night Squeaky Wheel hos …
According to Joy McDuffie, Foreclosure Prevention Specialist at the WNY Law Center, don’t believe everything you hear about foreclosures in Buffalo – they’re still a real problem. McDuffie says many think that Buffalo didn’t get hit hard by the sub prime lending market collapse, but that it just isn’t true.
“We’re really trying to help because Buffalo definitely has a foreclosure problem, but there are things that homeowners can do. We actually have a $700,000 two-y …

One can only imagine the number of BR articles that would be generated by a gay, grafitti friendly, skate park.

Fun parade, fun party, it reminded me of St. Patrick's day but only fewer people and a more boring procession. I think that although there has never been a better time to be gay in America this may be the end to the fun. The attendance wasn't as good as it has been in the past and neither was the parade. I am not sure if it was the heat, the threat of rain, poor planning, or just lack of involvement, but I thought that the parade in prior years was a lot more, well, gay.
I think I may head to NYC for the Puerto Rican Day Parade next year instead of the Pride parade here. I am proud to be gay 365 days a year and don't need a parade of peers to show it.

Even more if the skate park is mixed use and built to the curb, has bike racks and is dog friendly. Throw in a comment or two about Jane Jacobs, FLW or Toronto and you've got the recipe for BRO success!

btw I totally missed the Parade but happened upon the party at Bidwell. was something else going on? seemed to be a lot of people. I never was at one before so maybe relatively it's lower attendance but it sure seemed everyone there had fun.

Becker, I agree, the parade was only OK, marginal at best. Did anyone notice in the program that not one gay bar was a sponsor of the event. In fact only 2 [Kitty's and Fugazi] actually bought ad space in the program which is additional revenue for the Gay Alliance. Last, Q and Cathode Ray did not even do a float or have marchers. Yet these bars cleaned up all weekend with crowds patronizing them. Shame on them for only taking from the community all year and not giving back on one Pride Weekend.

I myself love those sexy girls of Roxy's and those stripteasers. Even though I have never seen about the Queen city roller girls are pretty good also.
