We All Scream For The Ice Creamcycle

The week prior to seeing David on the cart, James had told me that he had recently purchased a second Ice Creamcyle. “That one is mainly operated by Sam,” he said. “And I'm bidding on another cart in a few days. If that works out I'll have three carts in Buffalo this summer." I spoke to James just moments ago (as he was learning how to drive a stick-shift car). He pulled off to the side of the road to tell me that he's waiting for the ‘go ahead’ from Buffalo Place and/or City Hall before he finalizes the purchase of his third Ice Creamcycle. "It takes the company four weeks to make it, so I'm hoping that I'll have it before Garden Walk,” he explained. “Sam has been riding one of the carts and says that it's the best job that he's ever had - he's the guy who brings his guitar along with him. He's even made up some of his own ice cream songs to sing to customers."
Well, let's hope that James can get the clearance that he needs to take his Ice Creamcycle team further into downtown Buffalo (out to the Commercial Slip and along Main Street). Maybe by this time next year James will have an entire fleet of his carts racing around the city. I also hope that David gets some more hours on the cart…

If you're into science and you're looking to support the Museum of Science, then you don't want to miss this awesome event. Actually, the Museum of Science has been hosting a series of unique gatherings in recent years, but it is the Museum's Attic that actually gets you into places that not many people will ever get the chance to see. The museum's collection is so vast, that at any given time there is a fraction of items showing to the public. Even when exhibits rotate, that only …
Now we're talking... this Sunday (2pm-5pm), 250 incoming Medaille freshman are going to be heading down to the Commercial Slip. It's a joint effort between Medaille College and the Buffalo Tours program. Hopefully this trip will be just one of the many waterfront excursions that these students take during their time spent at the college. Not only will the students learn about the waterfront and the surrounding architecture, they will also be shown where they can catch the Metro Ra …
During tonight’s Democratic National Convention, a Buffalo State College alum will be in the spotlight. Gregory Smith, 44, of Brooklyn, N.Y., interned with Barack Obama’s campaign earlier this year and now works as a Colorado field organizer. Sometime tonight between 7:00 and 10:00 p.m., the campaign will pay tribute to Smith and the strength of his support.
Smith, who completed a bachelor’s degree in political science last May, has been an Obama supporter since 2004. After …
BRO’s regular readers know Buffalo is becoming more bicycle-friendly by the day, thanks to a perfect storm of factors ranging from gas prices to the health benefits of regular exercise to how great a summer breeze feels on your face. Well, add another reason to the list: riding a bike can help fight AIDS. “But John,” I hear you say, “how can riding my trusty little blue bike fight AIDS?” Well ok, it probably can’t. But riding the Big Bike on September 18 can. “But Jo …

A small business, created without ungodly tax concessions, wonderfully staffed by non-union workers, and growing....are we sure that this is Buffalo? I'm not saying that a few small, seasonal, sole proprietorships will save this city, but it does make for a nice model.

It was a treat to finally meet and get ice cream from James at the Black Rock festival Saturday, and it would be awesome to have an Ice Cream Cycle regularly on Main Street. Newell wanted to take the Ice Cream Cycle for a spin Saturday, but balked when we talked about taking his picture - nice to see David's not camera shy ;-)
The Scoopers Local 109 at 110 Louisiana Street (it's real - check it out) should be able to tell them if they can get union scale!

Tell David that next time he has to wear white sox & shoes or sneakers. No sandles or flip flops. Maybe a white hat or a hairnet. Just to be official. Health Codes.........!!!
