RENT will be swinging through Buffalo from January 13 through 18 in 2009.
Of course, you'll be able to catch the show at Shea’s Performing Arts Center. "We are thrilled to be one of the markets on the tour. Based on its previous success at Shea's, the musical will do very well here. RENT introduces young audiences to theater. In the past many young people came to the show that do not regularly attend the theater; RENT helps build audiences," Lisa Grisanti, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at Shea's Performing Arts Center stated.
If you've seen the musical before you'll recognize a few familiar faces from RENT's past. Original cast members Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp will be performing in the show at Shea's. Additionally, Rodney Hicks and Gwen Stewart who were both in the original company of RENT have also rejoined the cast to close the show.
As the seventh longest running show in Broadway history, RENT's time has run out as it is scheduled to close on Sunday, September 7. The musical won every major best musical award, including the Tony Award, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for drama. Shea's has also seen the success of RENT. "When the show was here it sold very well, this upcoming farewell tour is expected to sell very well also. People can purchase tickets now if they become a season ticket holder, but for others the tickets are expected to go on sale sometime in the early fall," Grisanti explained.

"Shea's will hold 8 performances of the musical. It's a really good story with music that is one of the best musical scores in Broadway history in my opinion. It's a combination of the choreography, music, and story that make this musical great," Grisanti said.
If you're not sure you'll be able to make the shows at Shea's you can at least catch the cast of RENT perform as part of the “Good Morning America” Summer Concert Series today, Friday, August 1. The concert will air nationwide on ABC beginning at 8:30 AM.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

We didn't renew for another year at Shea's this time - having been long standing season ticket holders. We decided once was enough for Rent and Mama Mia. Generally, the season looked uninspired and repetitious in part to us. I imagine we'll go back but not this year as season ticket holders. Perhaps just what we want to see from now on....

I agree with Yodar - once is enough. These guys are old enough to be the PARENTS of the characters they portray. The storyline etc. is very much of it's time (late 90's) and much of what it protested - corporatization (sp) of NYC, virtual reality vs. actual reality - has all come to pass - and not in the way hoped by the show. It's sort of like Hair coming through in 1980, all the hippies' fears come true, their kids, and they themselves, are yuppies.
