The Hertel business district is the latest area to land a Pay and Display parking system. The installation of the new system means that hundreds of parking meters will become obsolete and therefore will be removed. Last summer we covered the removal of meters on Court Street (see post). After the meters were removed, there was not one place to lock a bike on the street. Of course no one is expecting all of the meters to stay... maybe one out of five to keep a block bike-friendly (see Buffalo bike ring). The cost savings of not removing the meters could be designated to the construction of lock rings (seen in bottom photo - Allentown). Can you imagine if The City, in a year's time, decides that we need bike racks in our commercial districts? I called Director of Parking Leonard Sciolino's office and after waiting through a ten-minute message, the attendant wasn't familiar with the topic. I then called Tim Tielman of the The Campaign for Greater Buffalo (because he's been pushing the issue) who had this to say:
"I emailed Councilmembers and got a call back from Rivera's office. She said that she was going to look into it. LoCurto has a degree in urban planning from UB. He should make sure that this issue is addressed immediately. The meters should be bagged in the meantime to cause less confusion. I hope that they have not been removed already! We need to make Buffalo more bike friendly... especially with the gas prices the way they are. Is there a reason that the Councilpeople would not support the effort? Do they want to remove this opportunity from the people?"

That allentown bike ring looks to be rusting already...no? I certainly hope any new rings/old poles would be treated in a way to prevent them from turning into rusty pieces of metal...aka blight.

the ring you are looking at in the picture was done many many many years ago.. I have no idea exactly when but is not one of the new ones installed with help from steel crazy.

Hertel is already a particularly hard place to lock up your bike. I go there often enough to knoew which trees my lock will fit around and which ones it wont. not easy for me and not good for the tree. How come this isn't something like the beach.. it is an easy way to make the city a bike friendlier place. Just like cars, the more infrastructure and amenities available the more users will user the system. Studies in Germany have shown this and created new bike cultures where before none existed.
Who should we hound? This is a little frustrating and with gas prices on average 4 dollars a gallon around WNY (NPR today) this is something that should be on the forefront of politicians minds.

With the Complete Streets being passed, it seems that this would be easy enough to accomplish, especially if Rivera can get it in front of the Common Council quickly. I always thought it would be nice to make something Buffalo themed that would add an artisitic quality to the racks. I know someone has already made one, what happened when that was brought to the Council?

About Councilman Rivera, I've been fortunate to have met him at a couple of community events in the last month, and have been impressed - wish we had a few more like him on council in My Fair City. He's very engaged with the community, and it doesn't surprise me that he would have been the first to respond on an issue like this.

Just what we need, more hapless bikers on the streets of the City blowing through stop lights, stop signs and riding on the wrong side of the road. It's time to start ticketing these idiots before they wind up road kill.

Matthewjohn - hapless bikers? Should we ticket the bikers for blowing off stop signs because they might hurt someone? Let's ticket the cars that blow through stop signs at 30 mph and try to educate people on bikes that they have to ride WITH traffic - not against it. Let's ticket drivers who refuse to allow bikers to share the road. Bikers have as much right to a FULL traffic lane as a car. Most are conscientious enough to allow cars to share that lane by riding on the shoulder, but the law gives them the right to a full lane. I've never quite understood why people have so much anger toward bikers.

Parking Meters and Pay Toilets just what a progressive society needs, a true example of how far our capitalistic system has degenerated, make everyone pay, for something, some how.
I bet putting tolls on the bike rack appliances would stimulate the powers that are, to move this issue forward. If the public wants it, make them pay. We also need bike parking for the Micro Beach and Parking Meters at the Hatch.
