A Fixed Hunt

A Fixed Hunt

Story Options

It appears that scavenger hunts are the thing to do these days. If I’m not hearing of one, I’m seeing one… and if there is a scavenger hunt anywhere near, you better look out. That was the case as I was coming down Elmwood yesterday. There was a large mass of cyclists congregated outside of Campus Wheelworks. I knew right away that this was some sort of scavenger hunt, because there were a bunch of costumes in the crowd, and the three directors were dresses as Santa Claus, I Dream of Jeannie, and Bee Girl.

I took a look at the scavenger list, which looked to be fairly well organized. The race was to be performed in teams of two, on two wheels of course. This race was a little bit different than the race I covered a few weeks ago. Other than not being on foot, race organizers had gone out and hid various items in the area between the starting point, Hoyt Lake, Delaware Avenue, Richmond, and West Ferry. Some of the hidden items included a cowboy boot, a creepy robot Barbie, a praying Benji, a farmer snowman, a baby head with foot, and a hand grenade.

There were manned checkpoints along the way and different items racked up different points. It was interesting to see that there were points allotted for plaque rubbings – 3 points for rubbing young Abe Lincoln. And price checkpoints were given to those who could, for example, figure out how much waffle fries at ETS were. Other items of interest were Wu-Tang killer bee, picture with “Mean” Jean (if you live off Elmwood, then you know who that is, a ‘My lil pony’ XL, and a Buffalo Rising (hmmm… cool). This is the second year that this hunt has taken place, and if I ever get my act together and I get me a fixed gear, then maybe… just maybe, I’ll enter this race next year.

Congratulations to the team of Joe and Steve for winning this year.

Stay tuned for more fixed gear events taking place in Buffalo, including Bike Polo, Seven One Fixed, and news about a possible indoor velodrome coming to Buffalo.

Its great to see covereage of the (somewhat) underground bike scene in Buffalo. Just as a point of clarification though, this was not a fixed gear race. It was open to every type of bike. That said, you should still get a fixed gear and start building that velodrome!

AS one of the "directors" (the one dressed as a genie) I would like to point out a few things, it was not a fixed gear hunt as implied by the title. Also "bee girl" wasn't an organizer, just nice enough to play some music, the other organisers included the cowgirl and banana man. Thanks for the exposure and next year we'll contact you before the race to get the word out
