A connection will soon be made.

Last summer we scoped out the city bike trails and discovered that the last few pieces were still coming together. Those pieces are the last ones that will make a fairly continuous trail from Delaware Park to the waterfront and further on in either direction.
Today I ran into Tony (photo) who was coasting along on West Avenue while on his green cruiser. West Avenue has been cordoned off in order to connect the Scajaquada Trail and the Niagara Trail. It's a short roadway stretch that is now dedicated to bikes... and if you follow the trail markers up to Niagara Street there is a big surprise waiting just beyond the 'Bridge Closed' sign. The pedestrian bridge (bottom photo) has been installed and it looks like they are about to open it to people and bike traffic. That bridge leads to two different trails. One takes travelers up along Niagara and connects them with the International Railroad Bridge. From there, walkers and riders can easily make it to Squaw Island where the Black Rock locks are found.
The other direction (off the newly installed bridge) winds around to the shores of the Black Rock Canal, but that trail suddenly ends (in anticipation of a future trail that would follow the canal up to Robert Rich Way/West Ferry).
Even though that stretch is incomplete along the 190, the big news is the Seaway Trail tie-in with Squaw Island. It's a fun loop and dip filled ride... under overpasses and over some very historic wharf structures. From Squaw Island (another landfill turned public park) you can get just about anywhere.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

I remember when in the early 90's when I'd ride my bike up and down the river wishing things like this existed without having to ride on main roads at different parts. Now that it exists I'll be planning on heading to Buffalo from Rochester next summer!

Nice positive 'take' on West Ave, but it really was cordoned-off to stop the continual trash dumping under the Expressway ramp.

yeah it was a win-win for bikers and the city but in the end it doesn't really stop people from dumping it just slows them down.
This bridge has been taking years and years to complete. It was started at least 4 years ago for this little bridge, what is taking so long? I even remember crossing over a bridge there and going along the unopened pathways about 2 years ago now? What gives!! Just get the thing done!
Sounds like some contractor is making a killing staying "employed" for years and not actually doing anything.

There was talk of linking Delaware Park to the Niagara RiverWalk in the 1980's. We're right on schedule for the 30-year plan!

If you pedal north along the 266 (River Rd/Seaway Trail) you will be following the route of the Erie Canal; I made an overlay map which shows the route of the canal from Tonawanda to the terminus, it's a PDF on my website which you can see here and there's a detail map of Tonawanda on this this map in PDF
