7th Annual Holiday Open Studios and Galleries

It's not often that you get to visit over 100 artists and galleries all in three days' time. One of the main reasons that the Holiday Open Studios and Galleries' event has become so popular is that it gives the shopper the ability to learn about the gifts that he or she is purchasing.
Want to know how a particular piece of pottery was thrown before you purchase it? Curious about what a painter's inspiration was? It's also a nice opportunity for the artists in our community to become familiar with their fans. Believe it or not, there are some artists out there that track where their works eventually end up. Some of the venues are even located within studios located in the artists' homes... how is that for intimate?
Also if you are an artist living in Buffalo and would like to find out how to get involved with this holiday event, make sure that you send off an email to the event organizers (see contact email below).
Here's the event info: November 30th (5-9pm), Saturday& Sunday, December 1&2 (11-6pm).
*There are clusters of artists at 190 Bryant Street (Chatham Pottery Studio Gallery), 1215 Main Street (Artspace), 810 Elmwood Ave (Neighborhood Collective) and 1140 Delaware Ave (Gilda’s Club). This event is a wonderful way to avoid the rushed frenzy of the holiday shopping season.
Some of the fine artists and galleries who are participating this year in the Open Studios and Galleries include Annie Adams, (jeweler); Wendy Maloney (painter) Catherine Gillespie (potter), Julia Duax Skop (handmade glass jeweler); Barbara Hart, (jeweler);Paul Morgan (fine fabrics); Anne Bliss (jeweler);Buffalo Big Print (pottery and photography); Brian Art Galleries; Insite Gallery, Hart Studios.
This event offers a wonderful opportunity of exploring the city of art and learning more about the talent that flourishs in our community and to actually meet the individuals who create the gifts that are purchased and given during the holidays.
This year as a wonderful addition Gray Lines of Buffalo/Niagara Falls is offering bus loop service. For $10 people can get on and off as frequently as they wish all day. (There is no admission fee to any of the galleries or studios). This will make parking easier for people. Tickets for the bus and a map of the bus loop will be available at Chatham Pottery Studio Gallery (190 Bryant St), Insite gallery (810 Elmwood) Gilda’s Club 1140 Delaware and the Burchfield-Penney Gallery Shop (1300 Elmwood). There will also be a bus running back and forth between Burchfield-Penney Art center and the Tri-main Building.
Artists in Buffalo, the event’s sponsor, was formed in 2001, by a group of artists dedicated to building connections within the visual arts community and the region itself. The richness of the art in this community is fantastic. The organization’s web site, www.artistsinbuffalo.org, includes a virtual gallery of local artists as well as year round contact information for all the members.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …
