700-Block: Part 1 - Tabú

Like The Blue Mirage, Tabú is a cavernous space that retains an intimacy through use of its ‘loungy’ seating areas. Saltwater fish tanks, water fountains and silver-mirrored curtains add to the flavor of both downstairs and upstairs bars. “We’re going to be hosting Spa Sundays,” Jeff continued. “We’re hoping that customers will come in for a pedicure or a manicure, while enjoying a martini at the same time. It’s like mixing a spa with a bar. Then, on Saturday nights we’re putting on shows… every week the performers will showcase a different theme. Tomorrow (tonight), we’re hosting Frankie’s original and annual Pink Party (a portion of the proceeds will benefit Breast Cancer Awareness).”
Jeff and Frank hope that the word continues to spread that Tabú is a fun and open alternative ultra lounge. Shows like tonight’s, featuring DJ Lady Atram and the Ladies of Tabú will be commonplace… Jeff and Frank mentioned that the first two Saturdays were already big hits.
Tabú is located on Main at the corner of Main and Goodell. Admission is $5 and guests must be 21 and over. Oh… and you must wear pink to get in. I am told that the show goes on at 11pm and the stars must use their own voices due to City codes.

ValoreBooks has changed its name to Bucks4Books, and with that change, it continues to bring new and innovative ways to make it easier, less time consuming and more profitable for college students to sell back their text books. The Buffalo based company was founded in 2002 by a group of Western New York college students looking for a better alternative to on-campus bookstores.
Staying true to their slogan “A Refreshing Text Book Experience,” Bucks4Books made it their mission …
Earlier today we took our first walk through the brand new Burchfield-Penney Art Center. By the end of the visit I must say that I was a bit disappointed. Why? Because after walking through the entire complex, I found myself wishing that I had gone to the membership gala the night before. That was when thousands of members/supporters came together to revel in the glory that is The Burchfield-Penney Art Center.
The art center experience certainly lives up to all the hype that has …
This past July, the East Delavan Branch of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library was given a grant of more than $133,000 from the Josephine Goodyear Foundation to help improve literacy rates in the area as part of the Read to Succeed Buffalo Literacy Coalition campaign.
Organized by Good Schools for All, a program of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, the goal of the grant and its resultant programs is to achieve a 100 percent literacy rate in the City of Buffalo …
Almost nothing incites a turf war on Buffalo Rising like The City vs. The Burbs talk (unless, of course, the topic happens to be Classic Art vs. Modern, or Casino vs. No Casino, or anything to do with the Peace Bridge and trolls).
Therefore, we enjoyed this little parody from the Onion that pokes fun at the 'burbs, but at the same time takes a look at what might be a haughty attitude held by city dwellers in respect to the suburbs.
This piece pushes stereotype to the max in a to …

Their cubicles are too small and the towels don't smell fresh. And dim the lights, for crying out loud.

If its not Soho, then bust.
It always amazed me; could not believe the draw that Soho has. Seems like everyone's main goal in the city is to be at Soho by Midnight.
People here do not like to change up their routine. This place is off the beaten path and has no parking.
Furthermore, Buffalonians are not yet up to the Lounge type atmosphere. They are bar and chicken wing people. Not bottle service people.
Wish it were different, but it is not.

Lounge Scene is Hot right now in places like NYC. Being a party promoter in NYC, I should know, and the best lounges are the ones that offer foods like Sushi, Shrimps, Wraps, etc. ...Something to think about guys. But the Spa idea is something new, might just work.

Seriously, why the negative posts right out of the gate? From what I understand, they had to change the name from Blue Martini to Mirage (just as they opened) because of a threatened lawsuit by someone who already "owned" that name in another state. So, it doesn't mean this is the third incarnation of the place, just the 2nd. And good for them for trying something new. Maybe it won't be as busy (nor cheezy) as SoHo, but who cares? True, the parking is not the best, but City Lights and Rumors did it for YEARS with far fewer other things happening in the area. If their towels smell, tell them - maybe they'll change them! I wish them nothing but the best. We all should.

Was this post a kiss and make up after earlier two posts focused on Tabu's request for strip club license? Conveiniently, there's no mention of that or fact they even can't get a dance license because of prior bad acts. Did they give you free drinks to change your point of view?

Nope, just stopped in last night and had fun. And I don't remember WCP saying to not give them a license... I recall the tone of the post was hoping that they would get one. In the end they didn't even need one. I assume that people following BRO already knew the background, so why repeat it? If you're looking for the posts they are also searchable on BRO.

In the past, Buffalo and Niagara falls always had great strip and alternative clubs The Palace, McVans, the Stage Door etc. Its time to dump the bluenoses and put a couple of new ones in. Maybe then Bufffalo would come across more like the avant garde city it use to be instead of a fundamentalist backwater.

The paper towels that came out of the dispenser seemed pretty fresh to me considering it was a new roll [in a clean new bathroom which is refreshing in itself in a Buffalo Bar], it was also refreshing to meet a group of friends and relax in a lounge atmosphere on guess what...lounge chairs with fun music in the background. So what if they are trying to re-invent themselves. At least they are trying. A good time was had by all on Friday.

Frankie, all I have to say is -- you better work b*tch :-P You know I'll be there, I'm so glad to have a Marcella's alternative -- not that I go there anymore; but a new place that reminds of what cobalt could have been with the right owners that didn't run it down... =)
See you Friday Happy Hour, repeat of last week! And I hope the Pink party was great -- I missed it, ended up working doing the door for Yvonne.
At anyrate...... best of luck; I know it's going to go FABULOUSLY!!!!!
And to those of you being negative already -- it's not the same place with a different name. Parking isn't great *in front* but you have a whole long block from Allen St. to Goodell; it's a short quick walk -- and you can stop at Roxy's too!
