Buffalo Rising: Comments, Anonymity and Civility
Like any successful website or blog with comments, we generate a fair amount of comment controversy. We have valuable commenters who make the site better.  We have trolls who perpetually criticize everything and everyone without adding much value to the conversations. And we have some commenters who alternate between those two positions.  By and large, we think the commenter community we've cultivated here is the best in Western New York. It's certainly a lot better than what the Buffalo News has to deal with so we're grateful for that much.

Today, we published a story about a building for sale.  A number of commenters - some long-time BR commenters and some newly created accounts - used the post as an opportunity to criticize the building's current owner.  That criticism created real world personal consequences - the cost of which exceeded the

Paterson Agrees to Amendments to Historic Tax Credit Program

Assemblymember Sam Hoyt formally announced today the introduction of a Governor program bill that will include two amendments vital to the Historic Tax Credit program.  These amendments will allow for the sale of the tax credits to banks and insurance companies.

The introduction of a program bill by the Governor demonstrates tacit approval from the various state agencies that had previously objected to similar provisions that were in Hoyt's original bill. A month of

Precious Cargo: Living In A Great Lake Community
By Nate Drag:

In environmental debates over the Great Lakes, it is easy to forget that there are tens of millions of people that live, work, and play along the shores of the waters. Even here in Buffalo, the presence of the Lake Erie can fade into the background and offer only the simplest context to our busy lives. But for certain people, the Great Lakes offer inspiration and exploration. One such individual, Paul Lloyd Sagent, is artist in residence and curator of a new exhibit opening this Thursday March 18th at the University at Buffalo's Center for Fine Arts.

Steal the Steel
On Niagara Street this week I happened to see an oversize load go by on a flatbed which looked like a wing of a stealth bomber or something (except without the stealth turned on, or I couldn't have seen it, right?).  It reminded me of the occasional posts I've read along the theme of Big Things spotted rolling down our streets.

Well, according to The Buffalo News, the Mother of All Big Things Rolling Down

Sabres 3 game win streak and Hockey Hoodies!
The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Dallas Stars last night in a high scoring match (5-3) and set them on their way to a decent a 3 game win streak. It's good finally see  some wins after that long skid they went on. They went 5 games without scoring in the first period.

Rookie defensemen Tyler Myers tore it up with a 4-point game which is his personal best to date. Scoring the first goal only 55 seconds into the game, Myers kept up his hard work and continued to join the rush with Buffalo forwards. Vanek and Pominville each had a goal, which was good to see, and Patrick Kaleta stepped

He lost his life on May 24th, 2004 doing what he loved, flying high and far on a snowboard in the mountains of Italy. Historic Roycroft Campus Gets Lit
March has arrived, and while we patiently wait for the Crocuses to bloom, another sign of change and rebirth has already blossomed on the Roycroft Campus in East Aurora.  It's been decades since the lights, originally installed by Elbert Hubbard, graced Main Street in the quaint little village just 20 miles South East of Buffalo.  With the road reconstruction complete and winter fading, once again the path is lit for those who wish to Rediscover the Roycroft.
The lights were installed as part

Buffalo Rising Redesign - What Do You Want To See?

We launched this latest version of Buffalo Rising a little over a year ago.  This latest version has proven quite popular as our traffic continues to grow.  We had over 2.3M visits last year and our traffic through the first two months of this year is up over 20% over last year's first two months. Better yet, we just had our highest traffic day ever last week thanks in no small part to the

Say No to State Park Closures
Upset about Governor Paterson's announcement that would close a number of state parks as part of his plan to close the current budget deficit?
So are Buffalo Niagara RiverKeeper and Senator Stachowski.  If these closings were to occur, this would be the first time in New York State's history that a governor has closed state parks. Stachowski feels that there are better ways to save the state money

Chicken Wings Go Sky High
Restaurant owners have seen an increase in the price for chicken wings in the last few years.  Chicken (especially the throw-away wings) was once so cheap, but the popular demand for it has put pressure on supply for restaurants all over.
The more restaurants add wings to their menu the more the prices go up. Does that mean restaurant owners have had to change the menu prices for wings? No local restaurants in Buffalo were willing to talk (hang-ups and no call-backs).
However, the demand for chicken wings is causing restaurant

Regional Pizza
We know our pizza in Western New York, and Don Barton and his partner "Shrew" aim to get to know it better, endeavoring to eat their way through the 701 Buffalo area telephone book listings of pizza parlors in the 716.
Barton and Shrew have created a blog, pizzaclub716.com, where they will document and critique each of the pizzas they sample, and Barton says they're eating their way through the list as fast as they can.  "Everyone has a favorite pizza place," Barton says, "and the question of which is best is often a source of
