Sensible Niagara River Greenway Reforms Sought
New York State Senator Mark Grisanti and New York State Assemblyman Sean Ryan on Friday announced legislation to reform the Niagara River Greenway.  Created by state law in 2004, the Niagara River Greenway Plan was designed to improve the waterfront along the Niagara River, in 13 municipalities, by "creating a linear system of parks, and conservation areas, linked by multi-use trails".
A recently released report by the Partnership for the Public Good (PPG) has found that the Greenway Standing Committees, which determine funding for Greenway projects, have spent nearly $50 million since 2004.
The PPG also found that $23 million of that funding has gone toward projects that do not meet the original goal of the Niagara River Greenway Plan. Significant funding has been awarded to projects such

Preservation Award Winner: Niagara Falls City Hall

Niagara Falls City Hall was constructed in 1923-1924 in the Beaux Arts style and embodies Neo-Classical Revival architectural details. The exterior building material is smooth ashlar sandstone. The monumental stair at the front of the building and the free standing stair assemblies in the landscape have limestone treads, while the stairs have cheek walls of sandstone matching the building. The entry hall is a two story space with a central skylight made possible by the employment of a light court. The walls of this court are constructed of red colored brick. The building was listed on the National

For many years, the expressway has been seen as an obstacle between city neighborhoods and the waterfront. This project will fully restore visual and physical access to the various natural and cultural features along the Niagara River and the Niagara Gorge.

Preservation, it’s not just a city thing.
When I write about the preservation of our irreplaceable architectural heritage, my focus has understandably been concentrated on the City of Buffalo.  The City is where most of the older buildings are and where most of the destructive disinvestment has occurred.  But that does not mean Buffalo is the only place in the region where preservation is an issue.
Metro Buffalo spent most of the 20th century as one of the largest 15 urban areas in the country resulting in construction of dense historic urban neighborhoods throughout WNY. Niagara Falls,

Last month the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics put out the first official release of annual job data for metropolitan areas, so I wanted to take a brief look at this for large metro areas (more than one million in population, based on old metro area definitions that the BLS still uses). Recognizing the Potential of One HSBC Center

It is by now well-known that Upstate New York's tallest office tower will become nearly vacant by the end of the year. After decades of high tenant capacity, the 1.2 million sq. ft. giant will lose more than 90 percent of its current occupants. The biggest movers, HSBC Bank and Phillips Lytle law firm, have opted out of a renewed lease at the tower and already have plans to move into their own respective buildings upon lease expiration.  The tower when completed in 1972 brought new hope in downtown Buffalo. Today it is drab on the outside and in need of new
