For The Sabres, It’s All Over
The Sabres played one of their best games of the season Thursday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.  Unfortunately, it was a wasted effort.  Not only did the Sabres need to win, but they needed the Rangers to lose to the Flyers in regulation, which didn't happen.  As a Sabres fan, it's difficult to express the frustration you feel when your team puts in a heart-and-soul performance when, in all honesty, it just doesn't matter.

Thoughts from the barstools around me echoed similar sentiments: "Where was this team two weeks ago?"  After dropping wildly important games to the Thrashers,

Ryan Miller’s New Mask
NHL goaltenders are known for being superstitious, and Ryan Miller is no exception.  You've all seen his pre-game ritual, and the spin he does before heading to the locker room.  They all have their little quirks.  Hockey players of every position are noted for their equipment superstitions as well.  Remember Jay McKee's infection from a few post-seasons ago?  Rumor has it he was playing with decades old shin guards that cut his skin when he blocked a shot.

This information is what got our curiosity going after seeing Miller's new mask that debuted on Monday against the Red Wings.

Family Tab on BRO

One of the attractive things about Buffalo that people always mention when touting the city's better points is that it is "a nice place to raise kids."  Now, I grew up in Williamsville, and when I would hear that phrase repeated (a la all our relatives in New York City asking my mother for 100th time why on earth we were still living in Western New York) ad nauseam, I always took it with a boulder of salt. I was, for all

The Science Of Beer
Most of the time when we order up some beers, we're just happy to put that life-giving elixir into our bellies, especially after a rough work week, or if you're like me, before a long drive to work (just kidding.)  But it isn't often that we actually consider how the delicious beer is created.  Sure, we know that you need hops, whatever those are, and water, and some other stuff, and then you put it in a pot and...then...beer happens?  Don't worry, the Buffalo Museum of Science is here to help.

On April 24th from 6-9PM, the Beerology exhibit will tell you everything you need to

Photographer Don Nieman: The Morning After
Don Nieman had a very successful opening show at Buffalo Big Print last night.  In fact all of the galleries on Allen were packed so full of people that the tall windows facing the street were completely fogged. There was no shopping or spotting friends from the sidewalk; one had to enter the fray to be part of it.
In discussing the BRO brouhaha from yesterday's post, Don confirmed that his photo that appeared on the front page was, in fact,

The Hold Steady and The War On Drugs

There's something intangible about The Hold Steady that makes you grin.  Maybe it's Craig Finn's froggy warble and anthemic lyrics about the thrills of youth, or maybe it's the power pop guitar hooks, or maybe it's just their impeccably dressed and mustached keyboardist Franz Nicolay.  Regardless, the band brought their charm to The Tralf Tuesday night for a solid show that spanned their five-year career.

This Week In Memorable Local Advertising: Garcia’s Pub 1989
My look at memorable local advertising is generally limited by two factors: 1: If I can remember it and 2: If it's on Youtube.  Seriously.  It's pretty hard to remember all the local advertising I see unless it's REALLY memorable.  Some American advertising experts have theorized that the average American sees 3,000 advertisements per day, so you can see why I might not be able to remember EVERYTHING.  And unfortunately, what does usually stick in my mind are the ads that make me laugh, and sometimes they weren't
