Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Staff Review by Patricia Covley:
Don't confuse the books in this series with the TNT television show. The books are much darker and the characters are better developed. In The Silent Girl, Rizzoli and Isles are called to a crime scene in Boston's Chinatown when a young boy discovers a severed hand. Jane Rizzoli, her partner Barry Frost and medical examiner Maura Isles are called to the scene. A woman's body matching the hand is discovered on a nearby rooftop, decapacitated. Isles discovers that the weapon used to kill the woman was a sword.
The detectives discover a tie-in between the current homicide and an infamous Chinatown multiple murder from twenty years earlier. The reader is kept guessing as the detectives use every tool from Chinese folklore to modern forensic science to solve the mystery. The plot kept me guessing

It was at track three ("Pulse") that I knew Patchwork Walls was going to be an album I'd be forced to leave on repeat for quite a while. Singer/guitarist Nick Sessanna's strong delivery and singer/keyboardist Chrissy Krolewicz's lilting background presence meld together to create a rather desirable male/female vocal dynamic. Patchwork Walls combines the band's established influences like Brand New and Arcade Fire with their own Western New York inspirations to create a unique, indie rock sound all their own. Songs

THE BASICS: This long one act by Buffalo native A. R. Gurney is making its WNY debut this month at the Kavinoky Theatre. Directed by Chris Kelly, and starring Peter Palmisano and Saul Elkin, BLACK TIE runs weekends through January 29th. It runs approximately 90 minutes.
SIDEBAR: "Pete" Gurney is a naturalist of sorts. He has spent the lion's share of his creative life studying the life cycle, preferences and habits of a single species: the Great Dinner-Dressed (read: Tuxedoed), Silver Spooned WASP. Here, as in THE DINING ROOM and many others, Gurney

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, is a rock musical written by John Cameron Mitchell, with music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. The musical premiered in 1998 off Broadway, where it ran for a couple years and racked up both Obie and Outer Circle Critics awards. It has since been performed all over and has finally come to Buffalo in this excellent ALT production.
Mr. Mitchell starred in the 2001 film version of HEDWIG, which I recall as a somewhat muddled and confused affair, a result which could well be derived from the sometimes confusing material. The stage version

It's 2012 and and with the new year comes a couple of homeless cats that we are featuring who would make great companions for anyone who's feeling down with the blues. There's nothing like a feline pick-me-up when you're feeling a little lonely. Also, when the snow is falling, and there's a chill in the air, you always know that there's a warm furry friend waiting for you when you return home.
Ms. Haley is a 6 year old, DECLAWED, bundle of love who is a bi-product of a move to a new apartment where they can't have pets (see lead photo). Wouldn't you think
