Picking up on a comment Harvey Garrett made yesterday to a post on improving Buffalo public schoolsOe
The best way to improve our urban schools is to use school choice to send your kids to the school in your neighborhood, encourage all your neighbors to do the same, and then to get involved in the school.
Creating community schools is one of the things that no one can do for us. It's also the fastest way to take control of our kids education - not to mention what it does for the community surrounding the school.

The Allentown Association has lowered the price of the historic Coit House to $119,000. The Board of Directors decided to reduce the price to attract more interest from prospective buyers. The TreeHouse, owned by Gaetana and David, has been in business for almost 10 years. It is filled to the ceiling with fun, educational, and unique toys and gifts for ALL ages. I shop there for my sons, their friends, my nephews, and even some adult friends n they carry plenty of board and card games appropriate for everyone up to age 99.

Not all newly constructed housing in the city is located downtown. Sixteen new homes are being built in the Cold Springs neighborhood that are helping to stabilize one of Buffalo's oldest communities. Unlike other recent infill housing projects, these latest houses respect the scale and setbacks, the rhythms, and the structure of the neighborhood.
For years, the City has been building single-family houses on vacant lots within existing neighborhoods. This strategy has been used to fill vacant and blighted lots and provide affordable housing opportunities. The West Side Community Collaborative is joining forces with several groups on the East & West Side to plant a few dozen new ornamental trees around their new community gardens. This Thursday (or maybe Friday, Saturday, or Sunday - you never know with these community organization types) we will be planting 36 new ornamental, fruit, and shade trees across 8 different WSCC sites.
