On Saturday morning, May 3, from noon until 3, a baby Indian rhino named Clover will be celebrated with a "shower" including ice cream and cake.
Clover was born March 1, to Tashi and Henry and belongs to the largest of the Asian rhino species. These rhinos, which numbered less than 200 in the early 20th century, are now 2,500 strong.
Tashi is reported to be a very good mother to her baby, who weighed in at 135 pounds at birth. Clover, a good eater, will receive her very own cake at approximately 12:30 tomorrow, and visitors will be treated to cake at 1, during a question and answer period.
All treats, games and drawings are free with a paid zoo admission. More information can be found at www.buffalozoo.org.

This event was originally planned for last night, but Def had to postpone until today at 3:00.
Mos Def will be at Buffalo State College TODAY! to take part in a public discussion with campus and community members regarding hip hop's impact on the lives of individuals, particularly youth.
Billed as a message to young people pertaining to their role in community development, something tells us that this is going to be a push to join, not divide, along pop culture lines.
Def is described as introspective, insightful, and socially aware. He's starred in several movies, has won awards from the NAACP and he has written many songs about his native home, Brooklyn, NY. Some of his lyrics here.
One thing is for sure…

That sentiment truly reflects the news of Choco-Logo's upcoming event, “A Toast to Moms”. To celebrate Mother's Day, on Saturday, May 10th, Choco-Logo will be offering a factory tour replete with a wine and chocolate tasting. If you're at all familiar with their fantastic line of products, you know what a great time this is going to be! Anyone can come, though you have to be 21 to imbibe. Even better--it's free! Tours are set for various times during the day (between 1 – 4 PM), so call and make your reservations today.
While we're talking about Choco-Logo, let me tell you about their new truffle. A creation made with Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day in mind, but perfect for any occasion, it's the Strawberry Margarita Truffle. This morning I was able to taste a sample, and it was delicious. I found it to be very well-balanced, and the sea salt sprinkled on the top was…

Yesterday, the Mayor, along with Commissioner of Administration, Finance, Policy and Urban Affairs Janet Penksa, and Director of Budget Donna J. Estrich, announced the city's new $453M budget for 08-09. Brown stressed that this year's budget is 4% below the rate of inflation and shares the budget constraints faced by the general public in the City of Buffalo.
"The city will mirror the residents' sacrifices," Brown stated. "We're calling for cut backs on non-essential travel, purchases, overtime, and we'll closely track and monitor city expenses." In addition, the mayor and his staff have set up a "Rainy Day Fund" keeping a $30M reserve for use during any potential future fiscal crisis.
The garbage user fee will hold, property taxes will decrease by nearly 5 percent, and city services such as police and fire will see an increase in hires. The funding for these services wi…

These simple row houses at 174-182 North Pearl in the north east corner of Allentown were one of the city's first renovation projects. They were built in the 1880's following a design by architect Frederick Fischer.
As commonly happened in this part of town, the five once elegant, single-family houses gradually slid downward until they had become decrepit rooming houses. Thankfully, architect Bruce Garver, with rare early appreciation for the city's architectural treasures, saw great potential and completed a very fine restoration of the buildings in 1973.
His work brought back the beauty of their historic details while adding some contemporary elements that have withstood the aesthetic test of time. Though at first glance these houses look identical, there are actually two alternating types. Subtle shifts in detailing on the prominent bay windows give each a distinctive…

Back in 2002, Joy Rose was living in Westchester, NY looking for a venue to play her music. Rose wanted to create a venue for herself to play music but that would also feature people like her. That little thought turned into a concert, dubbed “Mamapalooza.” It featured a one night event on the lower East Side of NYC with just ten bands. It was a concert that spawned a global movement featuring women artists and artists who are mothers.
Annette Daniels Taylor had just moved to Buffalo with her husband. Her husband was originally from Buffalo, but Davis was born and raised in Staten Island. She had been in Buffalo for three years and was working on a music commission, when as Taylor says, “ I was trying to find a venue where we could play it again because it was called ‘Mama’s Song.’”
After some Internet browsing, Taylor stumbled across Mamapalooza. “I called and …

Avalon Development has signed an anchor tenant for its 723 Main Street renovation project. So what will the revamped property look like? RisingDamp666 on Queenseye’s original post demands, “Please no old-timey facade! Put a glass wall in front of this.” Does this qualify?
Avalon Copy Centers is taking 4000 sq.ft. of the one-story, 5500 sq.ft. building at 723 Main. Chris Jacobs’ Avalon Development has been buying and renovating a string of non-descript buildings on the east side of the 700 block in recent years.
In 2002, Avalon redeveloped the circa-1911 Stokes Seeds Building at 737 Main Street. The three-story building features 18,000 sq.ft. of commercial space that has been a big hit with technology and other firms that can be creative with the loft-like space.

Many folks are fired up leading into November’s elections, but a little bit of heat and excitement in presidential campaigns is hardly something new. William Harrison offered free booze in 1840 to attract voters; Grover Cleveland robbed the cradle and turned it into a campaign marketing tool; and Western New York native Belva Lockwood shook things up in 1884 as the first woman to run for the White House.
These stories are a part of Shaking Hands and Kissing Babies, an exhibit on presidential campaigns that opens this weekend at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society’s Museum. From Andrew Jackson to Abraham Lincoln to John F. Kennedy, the exhibit will show how presidential candidates shaped their image and dealt with changes in technology. The exhibit will also take a look at grassr…

Hundreds of Buffalo State students will receive the “red carpet” treatment during the annual EOP Honors Convocation at 3:30 p.m. today in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. The event’s red carpet décor and theme—“Imagine, Believe, Achieve: Taking Success to New Heights”—is fitting, as students are given every opportunity to shine.
Currently, 861 students belong to the Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program, an undergraduate college admissions and support program for students facing economic and academic challenges. Most not only overcome the odds; they eclipse them: 411 students will be recognized for having attained a 3.0 or higher grade point average during one or both semesters during spring and fall of 2007, or a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. EOP academic adviser Jude Jayatille…
