Though somewhat simple and not so unusual this South Buffalo house on Carlisle has a very distinctive presence. The straight forward form and bold front bungalow style porch with its strong protective enclosure is very charming. It is clad in an unusual stucco with a natural sand finish embedded with a dense layer of exposed pebbles. Truth be told this little house makes my list of favorite buildings for much more than its architectur…

Weather Commentary 2 - The Sequel
A month ago, I posted on how pitiful (snow-wise) this winter had been in Buffalo. Great for heating bills and wearing stylish shoes, but not great for winter sports and cooped up kids. I might not have complained so much except that we had just committed to ski club at Kissing Bridge and there was no chance for a refund. I was jonesin' for some powder.

This house is a little known part of the Darwin Martin House complex. Of course it was not designed by Frank Lloyd Wright but it does form an interesting piece of the major renovation project which is on going at Jewett Parkway site. It was recently restored to mint condition by the Martin House Restoration Corporation for use as their offices. It sits adjacent to the west side of the Martin House. The spectacular renovation designed by Hamilton Houston and Lownie Architects also serves as a great example of the more common type of house that was likely to be built by the elite in the early part of the 1900's. The contrast in style between this hou…
