What's Up With The Greystone Building...

West Coast Perspective

Plans for the renovation of the Greystone Apartment building at 24 Johnson Park have literally fallen through. Ellicott Development has decided that the ornate six-story structure cannot be economically renovated. Carl Paladino purchased the property in March 2002 with plans to convert the complex into a market rate, upscale apartment building. Work came to a halt after a worker fell through an upper floor while gutting the building.

Despite being one of the best summer's ever for working outside on my house, as with every year, I find myself racing to finish up all the projects I started during the summer before the fall rain sets in. I've been spending all my final dry days finishing up as much painting as I can, but after hearing it was going to thunderstorm on Sunday I decided to finish putting a new roof on my garage on Saturday. I worked hard on it all day but I still had a few hours worth of work to do by nightfall so I took out the spotlights (something I have a bit of a reputation for) and kept up the hammering until I was finished around 10:00.

I ran into Dave from The TreeHouse Toy Store this past Saturday, and I asked him how the turnout was for helping to decorate the avenue this year. "I've never seen anything like it," he said. "Everyone that said they were showing up did. And they brought their friends and family along."

Hmmm. I remember the days when you couldn't drag anyone out to help with this sort of thing. I had heard from Lacy (from Diggin' It!) earlier that day that t…

Restaurant Trivia Night Question for BRO

queenseyes

I was wondering if you knew of any bar/restaurant in the city that has a "trivia night"? I'm not really looking for a place that has the tv trivia games, or anything like that. I'm looking for a live person, asking a series of questions, in a competition. When I was in DC and San Francisco, there were a multitude of these contests daily, and I think the bars/restaurants really appreciated the business that they brought in during the week.

Thanks, Peter

For over forty years the massive, square block of poured concrete that sits like a giant football field in downtown Buffalo between Washington, Chippewa and Ellicott Streets has been a ishovel readyi surface parking lot. Flanked by the Market Arcade complex on Main Street and the great row of late 19th century buildings that house Maureenis Wholesale Florists and The Golden Swan on Ellicott Street, this enormous space was once, believe it or not, one of the great public market plac…

Guerilla Gardeners, that is. Yes folks, the City of Buffalo Guerilla Gardeners (CBGGis) struck again last night, this time at a neglected little plot at the foot of Court Street downtown, right across from City Hall and next to a busy bus stop. Inspired by some recent support from as far away as California to the west and Massachusetts to the east, the Guerillas felt they needed to make one more planting effort before packing away their trow…

The St. Calasanctius mural is really quite beautiful. The craftsmanship that went into the piece is impressive. From the details to the coloring of the work, this mural is a welcome addition to the Buffalo State Campus.
