Yet another great idea comes to fruition in Buffalo. There is a group of movie lovers that meet once a month at The Market Arcade Film and Arts Centre in downtown Buffalo to share their love of movies with one another. The club meets on the first Saturday of each month. Prior to meeting, a film is selected via e-mail votes from the members. An e-mail is sent to all members with the choices during the week prior to the meeting. Members then e-mail back with a selection that they would like to see. The film receiving the most votes is the choice for the upcoming (first showing btw. 6:30pm -8:00pm) evening. Then, another poll is taken. Where to go to discuss the movie over a drink. The discussions can take place in the lobby or they can migrate next door to the Ya-Ya Brew Pub. Here is an opportunity to meet new people, watch so…

Mayfair Lane

queenseyes

Tucked away on a small private street between Delaware Avenue and Elmwood Avenue, just off North Street, lies a quiet English mews. Designed by the architectural firm, Edward B. Green & Son during the mid 20's, this unique group of 21 stucco and brick homes allows a visitor to envision quaint village life while, actually, the homes are situated in the heart of a large city. The inspiration for the design of Mayfair Lane was an area in London, England, named "Pomander Walk." One of the most unique features of MF can be found at the end of the Lane. It is here that the architects designed a large house often referred to as "the castle," perh…

This 54,000 pound 1952 Mountain View Diner has become one of the most attractive and visible eateries on Main Street. Located next to The Steer Restaurant, LED is a labor of love and an integral part of University Heights' renaissance. Owner, Tucker Curtin rescued Mountain View #446 from an upscale Philadelphia suburb, and when I say rescued, I really mean it. The diner had been converted into a Chinese restaurant, and then had been abandoned, left to sit out in the elements for a long stretch of time. Well, if you take a look at the diner today, you might think that it is a replica due to the meticulous restoration that T…

It's the season to tour some of Buffalo's most prestigious old mansions. These are the enormous old homes that line Delaware Avenue between Summer and Bryant. Just driving down the avenue evokes thoughts of the incredible amount of power that made Buffalo one of the most important cities in the world. At a time there were more millionaires in 'The Queen City on the Lake' than any other city in the US. Millionaires' Row still stands as a testament to their ambition and their success.

Take a tour with Greater Buffalo, June 11th @ 10:00 am. Take an online tour with Buf…

Not your everyday skate/BMX shop

queenseyes

There's a new home in town for Buffalo's serious skateboarders and BMX riders- the Sunday Skate BMX Shop on Potomac Avenue. Founded by Jim Cielencki and Elmwood favorite personality J.P. Gillespie. The shop caters to those for whom riding is a lifestyle, not a hobby. -G.

Bouliane, BRM These guys are pros. I mean it. Jim (pictured on the right) has been riding stunt BMX since he was nine and currently has a seven-year sponsorship with Kink Bicycles. He also travels the world entering contests and performing in bike demonstrations. J.P. has been skating the streets of Buffalo as long as any of us can remember. He…

The Birge Mansion is situated in one of the most beautiful spots in Buffalo. But I can remember just a short time ago when I don't think I would/could have said that exactly. In recent years there has been a resurgence in and around Symphony Circle that warrants a few gold stars. Let's see, there was the addition of the mirror pool that hugs Kleinhan's Music Hall, then there was the addition of the 'original' roundabout and lamp standard which harken back to Buffalo's heyday. I imagine that all of these recent additions led up to the restoration of the Birge Mansion. It's the icing on the cake for Symphony Circle. The Geor…

Spinning a tale of Nature

Just a quick note to let you all know about a beautiful exhibit that will not be around for a whole lot longer. Sarah Prochownik is showing gorgeous new paintings at Art Dialogue Gallery on the corner of Linwood Avenue and North Street. For this exhibit her work is paired by works on paper by her late husband, Walter Prochownik in the second gallery. Walter was a beloved professor at the University of Buffalo for many years. The exhibit includes works on paper that have never been exhibited before. He commissioned a number of murals while he was alive, and there are a number of sketches for murals on exhibit.

Sarah Prochownikis work is particularly interesting to me though. She and I have been appreciating each ot…

City living at it's finest. What more could one ask than to be serenaded on Elmwood Avenue as you walk home from work? Really, Elmwood came alive this Evening. Every patio was packed (and there are a lot of patios these days), there was a super cool jam session forming outside of Spot Coffee, there were choppers parked at Merlin's as their riders ate clams and drank beers on the patio, and there were kids playing multiple games of hack on Bidewell Parkway. Everywhere you turn these days there is activity. The new Co-op is almost completed and Delish!is slated to open very soon. The…
