Hotdog Heaven

Hotdog Heaven

queenseyes

I've always been very curious why I have not seen more food vendors on Elmwood Avenue. Yes, we now have our infamous Ice Creamcycle cruising around the strip, but that's about it. This morning Drew Ludwig, Pastor of the Lafayette Presbyterian Church, called to inform me that he had just rented a small concrete footprint in front of his building to a hotdog vendor. Later in the afternoon I swung by to learn about the new partnership struck up between Drew and Nick Smith, proprietor of Nick's Dogs.

Nick had originally looked at setting up his first hotdog cart on Bidwell Parkway, but that ultimately proved to be too expensive. As fate would have it he then bumped into Drew who was outside mowing the lawn of the church. The two soon struck up a deal that benefited both parties - this past Saturday was the first day of operation for …

It's the Avant, See You There

Jennifer Lawandus

As WCP stated earlier this morning, the former-16 story federal office building located at 200 Delaware Avenue received its new name today: Avant, meaning moving ahead. This name is fitting for the building's forward design as Buffalo advances into the future.

The building is expected to be completed by June 1, 2009. However, as of right now you can contact Uniland's Judi Griggs at jgriggs@uniland.com to express your interest in one of the 37 condos. The condos are located on the top three floors of Avant and range from $370,000 to $1 million. One and two-story residences are available, with sizes ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 sq. ft.

RJW Retrospective Show Drawing To A Close

Eli George

Since June 6th, Robert J. Witzel has had a show at the Grant Street Gallery. Many of his watercolors have been sold, but they remain hanging until the show closes on June 29th. The newly created gallery has provided this unique artist a chance to show his retrospective art. At 90 years old, Witzel has a lot to look back upon.

There has been a steady stream of visitors since the large turnout for the opening and Witzel himself has spent a lot of time there. He returned this past weekend, even though he wasn’t supposed to be back in town till June 27th, to spend more time in the city he grew up in. One of the highlights of the show that shows Witzel’s Buffalo roots is a personal sketchbook that depicts Buffalo through the ages and includes several reproductions of Buffalo images.

Witzel will be in town till his show closes on the 29th, taking only a small break on Sunday to p…

If you’re craving something sweet, you’ve picked the right time to do it. Starting on Monday, June 23rd, Choco-Logo Confectionery Design will be kicking off its annual summer sale. Choco-Logo, whose name is modeled after “Coca Cola,” was, up until recently, the only chocolate factory shop in downtown Buffalo that had captured the attention of people from all over Western New York.

Creating anything from movie themed candy bars (they’ve created candy bars from everyone’s favorite Christmas movie, The Christmas Story – remember Ralphie?) to chocolate in Barry Manilow and Bon Jovi tins, anyone who walks into Choco-Logo is guaranteed to find something that they will like by the time they leave. Queens For A Cause

Eli George

With so many troops from Western New York overseas, it is a wonder that there has been a lack of showing how much the area supports them. That’s what Michelle Plowman thought – and it’s the reason she decided to organize “Queens For A Cause.” Plowman is the wife of Sgt. Major James Plowman of the HHC/327 101st Airborne Division in the United States Army. Plowman says, “For me…it’s not about the impression of the community, it is about giving back to the troops.”

The event is being hosted at Club Marcella. Owners Joseph Guagliardo (better known as Joey Marcella) and Dr. Michael Slyder approached Plowman wanting to do something for the troops at their nightclub. “Club Marcella was willing to host an event to give 100% proceeds to area deployed soldiers and HHC/327 in conjunction with Commerce Bank of Nashville, Tenness…

Movie Discussion: Fugitive Pieces

Todd Schoepflin

Fugitive Pieces centers on the character of Jakob Beer, a child orphaned in Poland during World War II. Struck with panic and trauma, he seems doomed to suffer the rest of his life with the horror he witnessed as a child. The viewer is drawn into three places during the movie: Poland, Greece, and Canada. Jakob is brought to a Greek island by Athos, a kind man who finds him in Poland while doing work as an archaeologist. Athos takes Jakob in and treats him like a son. They eventually move to Canada when Athos is offered a job there.

The adult Jakob is a writer who keeps a diary with no thoughts held back. The words in his diary reflect his pain. He writes: “Everything is wrong,” a phrase that summarizes his miserable mindset. He describes his lover Alex as having “shameless vitality,” words not intended as a compliment. They break up soon after she rea…
