For Amy Taravella, this weekend means her solo in what took two years to accomplish. The artist has been working in an intensive two-week creation session with three other artists in four different cities in two different countries. Together, they have scrapped together funds to combine their talents and create a unique production based on the four humours.
The four humours was a theory of the makeup and workings of the human body that began with Greek and Roman philosophers. The humours consisted of black and yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. Each artist of this group represents one of the humours and last year, all four of the artists who stem from Buffalo, Chicago, Toronto, and Montreal, managed to make it to Toronto to create the first humour –also known as Jerry. For the first solo out of the planned four solos, they managed to all be in residence at the Toronto Dancemakers Centre For Creation, but this year, due to funding complications, Taravella has been forced to take a new rou…

During tonight’s Democratic National Convention, a Buffalo State College alum will be in the spotlight. Gregory Smith, 44, of Brooklyn, N.Y., interned with Barack Obama’s campaign earlier this year and now works as a Colorado field organizer. Sometime tonight between 7:00 and 10:00 p.m., the campaign will pay tribute to Smith and the strength of his support.
Smith, who completed a bachelor’s degree in political science last May, has been an Obama supporter since 2004. After writing a letter to Obama more than 18 months ago, campaign staffers responded to him and kept in touch. Smith donated $25, even though finances were tight. He explains in the following YouTube video why he gave.
Later, on a few occasions when Obama visited the New York City area, he called upon Smith to introduce him at local churches and fundra…

BRO’s regular readers know Buffalo is becoming more bicycle-friendly by the day, thanks to a perfect storm of factors ranging from gas prices to the health benefits of regular exercise to how great a summer breeze feels on your face. Well, add another reason to the list: riding a bike can help fight AIDS. “But John,” I hear you say, “how can riding my trusty little blue bike fight AIDS?” Well ok, it probably can’t. But riding the Big Bike on September 18 can. “But John…” Hold on, I’m getting to that.
The Big Bike is a specially-built bike that seats 30 people, and AIDS Community Services is bringing it to the United States for the very first time for a ride around downtown Buffalo and along the waterfront. The ride will raise money and awareness for the fight against AIDS in Western New York, and will be followed by an exclusive reception for riders at Shang…

Now there's a mouthful... I don't think I've ever quite heard of a dedicated day longer than Sahlen’s Dog Days of Summer at Dug’s Dive Day. I guess that the point was made, and that's the important thing. Monday, September 1st is, officially, a day to enjoy a Sahlen's dog and the waterfront... it's a combo deal according to The Mayor. And as much as I'd like to see it (cough, cough), I'm probably won't be able to make it to Dug's Dive in time to see the Sahlen’s World Picnic Style Hot Dog Eating Championship. These types of events are big draws - ever caught one on the Food Channel? They can be hard to swallow.
Anyone willing to gorge themselves on dogs that day can go up against the likes of Canadian pro-eaters “Furious” Pete Czerwinski and Pierre “The Food Machette” Vincellette. Arnie “Chowhound…

What would it really take to recreate and re-brand the Main Street side of the Main Place Mall? While biking past 'the mall' last night I snapped a couple of photos of the mild disaster that we know as the Main Place Mall. In this day and age, how hard would it be to put a new treatment on that thing? Take down the cheesy awnings, put up some attractive signage, clean the windows, get the clutter away from the windows... there are some usable elements that could be incorporated into an entirely new look for the facade.
From what I understand, the Main Place Mall will be with us for quite a while. If you actually walk through it you will see that there is potential to showcase the few remaining shops to Main Street passersby. But at this point there are outdated signs (very bizarre) and outdated looking storefronts. This is not a million dollar project - and if the attempt to spr…

Starting this fall, a few Johnson Park/Allentown neighborhood people are going to be getting together and running a laid-back movie night. If everything goes according to plan, the idea is to show low budget, obscure b-movies. Our group has begun to conduct preliminary research on movie rights (doing it by the book) and locations. We think that we've found the ideal venue at this point, and for anyone who has ever seen a theatrical performance at the New Phoenix Theater (on Johnson Park), then you know why it's the perfect spot.
We're hoping that the shows will attract somewhere around 25 people - of course the line-up of flicks will not be for everybody. Movie titles will range from Mars Needs Women to Frankenstein's Daughter. We're working out the logistics with the theater and snooping around for a screen and a projector. Yes, we'll serve up some popcorn and maybe even incor…

A piece of Main Street’s 500 block is moving closer to reuse. Restaurateur Don Warfe has the circa-1880 Stewart & Benson Building at 501 Main Street under contract. Warfe expects to renovate the three-story, 6,000 sq.ft. vacant property into a mix of residential and commercial space.

I can't tell you the number of times that someone tells me that they missed out on an urban outdoor activity because he or she was not aware of it. Over the last two years we have seen an explosion of healthy outdoor activities sprouting up. There are a number of organizations out there that are contributing to this phenomena, including Riverkeeper... these groups have organized everything from moonlit kayak trips down the Scajaquada Creek to bike rides along the lake.
The following trips are organized by Riverkeeper. Once you go on one, you'll want to head out for more.
Upcoming Outdoor Urban Trips:
Hike

By this time, we all know how important it is to clean up our waters. Our water is our most valuable resource, and will become more and more precious in years to come. That is why Riverkeeper is looking for community volunteers for this year's Autumn Beach Sweep. Don't just think that you don't need to roll up your sleeves because others always show up and get the job done. That's not the case. Each year the amount of waterways that get cleaned depends on the number of volunteers that want to make a difference.
Please consider spending the day outdoors cleaning on Saturday, September 20th, from 9am to 12pm. This year there are thirty sites to choose from and Site Captains will be on-hand to make the time you spend cleaning as efficient as possible. All the cleaning goodies that you will need will be supplied, and after the event there will be a big party where everyone can enjoy…

Moments from now, Superintendent of Buffalo Public Schools Dr. James Williams will make an announcement to the Buffalo Board of Education that he is extremely happy about.
It was a long time in the making, but the union representing the Buffalo District's Teacher's Aides and Assistants has unanimously voted to drop litigation and accept single carrier insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield of WNY. Williams and Buffalo Educators Support Team (BEST), the second-largest union in the District as well as the city, entered into the contractual agreement on Monday when BEST President Ellis Woods and Williams approved and signed the contract.
Williams made the statement that the agreement will drop wage freeze lawsuits and give workers the same quality coverage, but under a single carrier. "They're not giving up anything," Williams stated, "and now we have leverage as to cost." …
