Saturday I enjoyed spending time with some fine Buffalo folks, and took part in a popular October ritual: drinking Pumpkin Spice Latte at Caffé Aroma (http://www.buffalorising.com/story/a_taste_of_fall_at_caffe_aroma). But while sipping and watching the life on Elmwood, things suddenly got weird and we found ourselves watching the unlife.
Covered with blood, gore, and gashes, dozens of moaning zombies began shuffling past. What could be responsible for the sudden zombie invasion, we wondered. Sunspots? A disease? The financial meltdown (one of the zombies looked at bit like a broker friend of mine)? The Bills losing ugly last weekend?
On hearing several of the zombies moan “brains…brains…” I momentarily feared for the safety of my caffeination companion, who has an unusually fine brain. But the gruesome parade continued shuffling past. Later, on th…

This is a bit of a combination of two architectural series I have run on BRO for a few years now. I was recently digging through some old pictures and came across this early 1980's vintage image of a favorite building that I have not thought of for a while.
119 Tupper Street is 1/2 block west of Delaware just off the beaten path in a short row of buildings which make up a very charming street-scape. If not for a few destructive parking lots on the block this would be on of the city's most beautiful places. I could not find any history on this one with quick internet search. Perhaps it was a fire station? If anyone knows anything please chime in. It looks very much like an E. B. Green building, but I have been wrong on that guess before.
The newe…

Detroit celebrated the reopening of the Book Cadillac hotel on Monday. The 84-year old property, vacant since 1984, was renovated at a cost of $190 million. What was once a symbol of the city’s decline, is now a symbol of hope and rebirth.
The Westin Book Cadillac Hotel and Residences features 453 rooms and 64 upper-floor condos, 50 of which are sold.

A news flash for those of you who've been in a coma the past few weeks - stock markets around the world have crashed and we're in the midst of the largest financial crisis since the Great Depression. Put another way, it's panic time.
As markets everywhere - from Brazil to Russia and from Iceland to Ireland - have cratered more than 40% from their all-time highs, Buffalo-based companies have not been immune from the sell-off. Bloomberg has created regional-specific indexes for all major metropolitan areas and the Bloomberg Buffalo index includes all publicly-traded companies that have substantial operations in the Buffalo metro area.
Specifically, the Bloomberg Buffalo index includes First Niagara, M&T Bank, Taylor Devices, Delphi Corp, Evans Bancorp, National Fuel Gas, Ford, General Mills, Rand Capital and a number of other companies. In total, the Buffalo index has fall…

It certainly was a beautiful day in the neighborhood yesterday, and many of the merchants along Elmwood brought tables full of wares out to the sidewalk to celebrate it. We found the perfect silks and fine Italian cottons at Sandy Hertel's Elmwood Village Fabrics in order to make scarves that no one else will have. If you're a fan of handing out homemade gifts at holiday time, now is the time to start!
The fabrics we purchased, part of Sandy's trunk show (ending Tuesday!), are as beautiful and unique as everything you would expect from Elmwood Village Fabrics--and very affordable. If you're one of those people who sees pillows, wall hangings, drapes and...yes, silk scarves and thinks, "I could make that for so much less!" stop thinking about it and get some fabric and gentle coaching from Sandy. Be sure to check out Amy B…

It is no secret that Buffalo has seen better days. Sometimes it seems like if we could just catch a break, we might be given the opportunity to force through whatever it is that is keeping us back. The B-Team, a group who believes that the city is turning a corner, is a loose network of individuals united under the single most powerful force Buffalo has at its disposal—resilient people. They are not looking to be given anything, they are looking to take back Buffalo by the horns and engage civilians in civic activity.
Matt Carlucci and Joe Malczewski, two of the group’s founders took time between jobs, football practice—both play on a semi-competitive flag football team—new families, volunteer projects and events to tell us a little about what the B-Team stands for.
Carlucci offers this analogy: “It’s the fourth quarter and we’re down by 6. The starting quarte…

CD release parties don’t come but once every few years per band, and if you miss one, you might have to wait awhile for the next. Back in 2006, Babik held a sold-out CD release party at the Tralf Music Hall and their CD quickly became a #1 best-seller in the Buffalo area. For those who missed the chance to help the band debut their latest creation, that opportunity has come around again, and this time, try not to miss out.
Their second CD, American Gypsy, is their first one that was recorded entirely in the studio. It features thirteen tracks of the gypsy jazz band, many of which were written by the band members. Quite a number of the tracks on the CD have never been performed live and that will be the biggest draw to the CD release party – the chance to hear it for the first time live and in-person.
Babik isn’t one to disappoint. Though they’ll be playing all…

Many of you have heard the statistics about the teenage mental health issues, most infamous being the teenage suicide rate. When it is the third leading cause of death in the age group between 15 and 24 years old, it is a serious problem. To help combat mental health issues like suicide, depressing, and eating disorders as well as raise awareness about mental health amongst teenagers, H.E.A.R.T. was born.
The Mental Health Association of Erie County, Inc started H.E.A.R.T. (Helping Every Adolescent Rally Together) in June of 2006 to help teach the importance of mental health awareness to adolescents through the use of artistic expression. Students whose schools have opted to take part in the program have the opportunity to learn to express themselves through the use of music and other forms as well as a traditional classroom portion to help them learn the concepts of good mental…

It’s a little strange at first--when you walk into a yoga studio on the Elmwood strip on a Monday evening you expect to see a group of people practicing a savasana or a tadasana. Instead, you see people flying around the room, swing dancing.
Back in January BuffaloRising.com reported on a series of lindy style dances that were being launched at Shakti Yoga at 220 Lexington Avenue. Well, “Lindy Fix” on Monday night is going strong, and you’re invited to grab your dancing shoes and stop down. It starts off with a lesson at 8:00 PM, followed by an hour-and-half of dancing.
The group is led by Rob Leach, who came here from Santa Fe, NM back in July ‘07, where he performed with Moving People Dance Theatre and New Mexico Swing Fix. Rob travels to many national level workshops and has been honing hi…

You may remember this post from last year, when we featured a custom snow globe of Buffalo's City Hall created for The Floristry by Avalon Scarves.
This year, Avalon and The Floristry is allowing their loyal customers and BR readers to have their say in which piece of prominent local architecture is featured. What building(s) of Buffalo's heritage would you like to see recreated in a snow globe?
The choices are Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens, The Richardson Complex Towers, The Grain Elevators and Erie Canal, Crystal Beach and the Canadiana, The Electric Light Tower from the Pan American Expo and the ever-flexible "Other".
Avalon has set up a voting poll via Google which will help them simplify the tabulation of the results.
