Carl Paladino is shaking it up once again, and next to the calling for the toll barriers to come down, this may be a hit with the general public.
"I'm asking our legislative candidates to vote for a Constitutional Convention," Paladino said. "This can happen every twenty years, the last time being 1996, but it hasn't been done since 1938."
Paladino's objective, he says, is to get both houses to vote by majority for a referendum on the ballot. This, he explains, would put to vote delegates from each senatorial district in order to rewrite the constitution to the State of New York.
"In New York, there's no way for the people to change things," Paladino said. "It's the 'three men in a room' way of making policy."
Is there anything in particular Paladino wants to go after within the rewrite? "No. It's just better than complaining about individual issues. Three delegates from each senatorial ditrict--elected by the people--would convene and draft constitutional amendments. They wou…

The Nicole Kidman/Studio Arena hoax that recently hit the media is an opportunity for some discussion about the way news travels these days, and begs comment on the phrase "Any publicity is good publicity".
After speaking with someone closely related to Studio Arena, who wishes to stay anonymous, it seems like the Kidman hoax was timed perfectly—in order to circumvent corroboration—and named just the right names in order to look plausible. Add to that the fact that many of the journalists who were duped reacted directly to the number of times the story came up on Google—so much that they thought it must be for real—before they were able to confirm with a reliable source. And then they ran with it. It was a knee-jerk reaction to thinking they were being left behind the pack.
The person we spoke with was also convinced of the bogus stories as a direct result of believi…

For over a decade, PRINT Magazine has been publishing a Regional Design Annual. This homage to graphic design receives more than 20,000 individual entries and only around two hundred are chosen as worthy entries into the yearly publication. They whittle down the entries in a stringent process of selection, picking only 5% of the first-rate winners from each region of the country that represent the best design, illustrations, and photography in the United States. This year, The Martin Group is proud to receive that honor.
The Martin Group was founded in 2001 and has quickly risen to the top in the ranks of WNY’s strategic branding and creative marketing firms. It utilizes its proprietary Brand Fuel process – a mixture of research, positioning, and creative invention – to create brands for organizations large and small. Their winning entry this year was a brochure designed f…

Now that the Senecas have suspended construction on both their embattled Buffalo Creek Casino and an expansion on their Salamanca site, the question is for how long and why.
Seneca Gaming Corporations (SGC) Public Relations Manager Philip Pantano says that the time frame is indefinite and the reason is based on a downturn in casino operations across the country, though he says the Seneca facilities have experienced growth of double-digit increases in the last two quarters.
The amount saved per day in halting construction on the projects totals a whopping $300k. Pantano assures us that in regard to the lawsuit against the Buffalo Creek Casino in which Judge William Skretny has directed the National Indian Gaming Corporation (NIGC) to shut down gambling at the Buffalo site, "The decision would have been made regardless of NIGC."
When asked if this was a pronouncement on the loc…

Few private citizens can claim awareness of the growing pet population like Robin Johnson can. Johnson owns and operates Vilardo Printing at 326 Connecticut Street and since she took over the business in 2001, she has started rescuing stray and abandoned cats. For Johnson, it started out as one cat, but then it became two, then four, and well, as Johnson puts it, “you know how it goes. There were always cats around the city and when you take in one cat, you always have a gazillion more.”
Johnson herself cares for 13 cats. She bought the building her company is in and since that there was no landlord to answer to, she houses 9 of the cats there and cares for 4 cats that remain outdoors. Johnson has taken pity on these animals and makes sure that they have food. When she adopts one, she takes it to the veterinarian, makes sure it is free of disease, feeds it, and has it spayed…

Work started on returning two-way traffic to Main Street's 700 block on Monday. Yesterday, Avalon Development made a strategic purchase on the same block where it has been working since 2001. The development company headed by Chris Jacobs acquired 715 Main Street at the northeast corner of Tupper. The highly-visible building contains 6,110 sq.ft. of space with coveted rear parking along Washington Street. Plans for the building are not known.

Museum's Attic

If you're into science and you're looking to support the Museum of Science, then you don't want to miss this awesome event. Actually, the Museum of Science has been hosting a series of unique gatherings in recent years, but it is the Museum's Attic that actually gets you into places that not many people will ever get the chance to see. The museum's collection is so vast, that at any given time there is a fraction of items showing to the public. Even when exhibits rotate, that only showcases another small part of the overall collection. That's why this fundraiser is so special.
On Saturday, October 4th, be sure to attend the 5th Annual Museum’s Attic from 6:30pm to 11:00 pm. Tickets are $75 and include dinner/dessert - cash bar is available. This year there will be a museum-wide treasure hunt and a curator-led behind-the-scenes tour. Live entertainment will also be provided. *A…

Now we're talking... this Sunday (2pm-5pm), 250 incoming Medaille freshman are going to be heading down to the Commercial Slip. It's a joint effort between Medaille College and the Buffalo Tours program. Hopefully this trip will be just one of the many waterfront excursions that these students take during their time spent at the college. Not only will the students learn about the waterfront and the surrounding architecture, they will also be shown where they can catch the Metro Rail and how to take full advantage of the public transportation options.
This is one of the most important acclimation processes devised by the WNY Service Learning Coalition. After the students become familiar with their surroundings, they will be introduced to groups and organizations that can help to provide the students with an even stronger connection to Buffa…

For Amy Taravella, this weekend means her solo in what took two years to accomplish. The artist has been working in an intensive two-week creation session with three other artists in four different cities in two different countries. Together, they have scrapped together funds to combine their talents and create a unique production based on the four humours.
The four humours was a theory of the makeup and workings of the human body that began with Greek and Roman philosophers. The humours consisted of black and yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. Each artist of this group represents one of the humours and last year, all four of the artists who stem from Buffalo, Chicago, Toronto, and Montreal, managed to make it to Toronto to create the first humour –also known as Jerry. For the first solo out of the planned four solos, they managed to all be in residence at the Toronto Dancemakers…

During tonight’s Democratic National Convention, a Buffalo State College alum will be in the spotlight. Gregory Smith, 44, of Brooklyn, N.Y., interned with Barack Obama’s campaign earlier this year and now works as a Colorado field organizer. Sometime tonight between 7:00 and 10:00 p.m., the campaign will pay tribute to Smith and the strength of his support.
Smith, who completed a bachelor’s degree in political science last May, has been an Obama supporter since 2004. After writing a letter to Obama more than 18 months ago, campaign staffers responded to him and kept in touch. Smith donated $25, even though finances were tight. He explains in the following YouTube video why he gave.
Later, on a few occasions when Obama visited the New York City area, he called upon Smith to introduce him at local churches and fundra…
