Sunday

Sunday was a mob scene today. The feel-good board shop was full of happy skate fans who love their sport, though co-proprietor, JP Gillespie, is quick to point out that it’s more of a lifestyle than a sport.
True. Along with splashy boards and gear, you’ll find a lot of sound philosophy intermingled with the good times. On Potomac near Elmwood, Sunday is one of the most positive places happening. It doesn’t matter what age you are—they don’t dis’ the dinosaurs or talk down to young people. Co-owner, Jim Cielencki, doesn’t say a lot at all, but the BMX king’s presence is huge.
If you were fortunate enough to see the DVD, “Hey Man Woo!” that Jim and JP put together to commemorate their first year in business this past April 1st, you’ll recognize a lot of the faces in the shop. Tony was there, along with Brian and Dave.
If you haven’t seen the video, pinch ten bucks out of your Christmas dollars, and go buy it! It will be incentive to grab a board and go for it—there’s your New Year’s fitness regimen. If you’re a parent with a little dumpling sitting in front of an X-Box, buy the kid a board and watch their life improve. As a plus, on the way out of the shop, JP will most likely tell your child how lucky they are to have a parent who cares—so you don’t have to.
There are a lot of reasons to drop by Sunday, but while you’re there sign the petition for a proposed skate park under the skyway. And after you watch the video, you can help JP and Jim name the new one that’s coming out April 1st of ’07. Sunday, it’s the first day of the week, and the last word in fun.
