3. Raising chickens in Buffalo.

My goal is to grow enough fruits/vegetables to sustain a small family and have some fresh eggs... I live in N. Buffalo so Fillmore/Leroy is close enough of an area with plenty of vacant lots but still close enough to ride a bike. Any comments/questions/concerns would be appreciated!

I purchased my 2-unit 1885 Queen Anne on Orton Place in Allentown last July. My family is growing and we are considering releasing our tenant and converting the house into a single family.

I've heard from not-too-reliable sources (a.k.a., bar folk) that the city offers some kind of assistance to home owners who are converting a double into a single. I also seem to remember reading something in the Allentown newsletter that a recent re-zoning of the Allentown neighborhood qualified a number of new structures for historic neighborhood status and improvements on the structures could result in some tax breaks (or something along those lines).

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Any resources you could point me towards so that I can be sure to research all possible cost-saving options? I appreciate it.

Hello, I am a city mom and I have created a website that compiles many things for kids to do in the city. I have often heard of events after they have happened, or so far in advance that I forgot about them. So, I started compiling things for myself by date. I thought that this might help other parents as well, so I've created a site where you can search by date, time of year, or things that are open year 'round. This way, if you have a free date to spend with the kids, you can look to see if there is anything specific going on in the city that day. One of the lessons I've learned from Buffalo Rising is that rather than complain about something, make it happen. So, rather than complaining that there wasn't a website like this, I made it happen. I hope it's useful. If so, bookmark it and check back often. I'll update it as much as I can :) http://bflokids.weebly.com

The "steele" person that comments here had also commented about his elderly dad's long ago City of Buffalo property involvements, investments and demolitions. And, BR's Steele, who is the elderly gentleman's son, appears to still have deep City of Buffalo interests.

City-Buffalo property information lists 20 properties in various locations owned by Steeles, making at least some of them landlords.

Then, low and behold, In today's local newspaper there is a HUGE, I mean REALLY HUGE 2-page write-up about a Steele who used to steal but has since made himself number one and quite wealthy through honesty and equipment ownership in the demolitions of houses in Buffalo, many houses of which, incidentally, of course were abandoned by landlords! This article also includes investigations.

The article is titled Mr. Demolition Man.
