Captain Jack’s is Back
First we waited and waited.  Then they were here, and before we knew it, there was a mysterious "Gone Fishing" sign hung on the door, and Captain Jack's was closed.  "A weekend excursion?" we wondered.  Then, weeks turned into months.
Now, the Elmwood Avenue fish and chips eatery has reopened.  Owner Pete Cavaretta is glad to be be back in business following some last-minute inspections from the fire Marshall that kept the business in a suspended state from November until now, after first being permitted to open last summer.
No doubt fans of Captain Jack's will be happy to be able to patronize the popular establishment again, and Cavaretta is glad to be reopened in time for Lent.  Let's all go there this week and see if we can't help Cavaretta make up for lost time.

Gluten-Free?

I confess, I don't normally have to watch what I eat.  The world is my oyster.  I have no food allergies, no cholesterol problems, and I relieve my guilt by working out twice a week.  When my best friend Nicole found out that she is allergic to wheat - and that she had to start following a gluten-free diet - going out for food with her became difficult.  This year, she spent her first Valentine's Day as a gluten-free woman.  When her boyfriend Frank asked me to recommend

Bangkok Tokyo on Hertel: Thai and Sushi
We've been hearing good things about the Bangkok Tokyo Bistro that opened this last  December in the former spot Pangea occupied, so Elena, Bella and I decided to check it out.  Having spent my late-teens working at a local Thai restaurant, I can't say that I crave Thai on a regular basis anymore due to over-saturation.  Bangkok Tokyo, however, might change that for me.
Bangkok Tokyo is a family project. Owners Eric Phothirath and Noy Luangrath are husband and wife, and they've recruited their nephew Jimmy to help with the eatery (and some of

Local Restaurant Week Makes a Comeback March 8 - 14
Local Restaurant Week - we love it.  It gives diners the chance to try new places at a low price of $20.10 for at least one entree in each participating restaurant (though many offer more), and it brings plenty of new customers into the restaurants. Everybody wins!
Click here for a full list of Western New York's participating restaurants including many Buffalo favorites.

Aphrodisiacs on Allen Street: Valentine’s Day at Sample Restaurant
It's become a tradition, February rolls around and Chef Adam Goetz of Sample Restaurant knows it's time to start experimenting with aphrodisiacs. He pulls out his reference list of foods that are considered aphrodisiacs and asks himself, "How can I reinvent these ingredients?" Once again he has created a delicious menu which creatively incorporates almost all of the aphrodisiac foods listed on his reference list.

Couples are greeted with a chocolate covered strawberry martini. They start their feast with a trio of hors d'oeuvres including: Oyster "Rockefeller"--baked oyster with garlic

Alas, Sunday comes but once a week...
If you're like me and you're always looking for the next great place to enjoy Sunday brunch, you should know that Juniper just added brunch to its repertoire. I was lucky enough to enjoy the restaurant's initial offering earlier today - I have been waiting ever since they opened to try it out, mainly because the dining areas are perfectly designed for brunch-style eating. Any place that has such dramatic lofted windows with an eastern exposure already has an advantage over the competition.

NY Style Pizza On The Way
There's a new tenant moving into the vacant Sahara Grill at the corner of Elmwood and Bidwell. I'm glad to see that corner get another business so soon considering it is such a hi-profile location on the street. Zetti's Pizza and Pasta has branded the location with signs, signaling their intentions to open.

At one point there was an other pizza place in the building - Just Pizza, but they eventually relocated down to the corner of Elmwood and Summer. The interior of this building is set up perfectly for a pizza joint, and if they do it right, should become a hot sit down destination.

A Romantic Valentine
Yes, this is a fund-raiser.

But it's also a deal.

After all, a Valentine's dinner for $25 is, in and of itself, a deal.

But a three course meal?  With drinks?  And entertainment?  And it raises money for a church that is generously striving to make a difference in our neighborhood?  And free child care is included?  If it sounds like a no-brainer, you need to be at "A Romantic Valentine" on Saturday, February 13th, at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Risa’s Restaurant Opens Today
I'm always looking for new places to try lunch in downtown Buffalo. When I fist heard that Risa's was opening at 285 Delaware, I was excited for three reasons. First, Risa's was a reputable Hertel establishment that still commands an immediate following. Second, the Uniland building is a great infill addition to the already beautiful Delaware Avenue streetscape, but unless you are one of the 400 workers inside the building there is not a reason to walk inside. And third... now that there is a culinary
