JAPANESE TEA CEREMONY
Thursday March 24, 2011 7:00 PM
Event Details
The program will begin with an introduction to Japanese aesthetics and the principle of Ichigo ichie, the idea that no matter how many times we might try to recreate an experience, that original moment can never be repeated. This performance is informed by the four principles of the tea ceremony: harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. Atsuko Nishida-Mitchell, certified tea ceremony instructor and Martin House docent, will perform the ceremony. A demonstration of Japanese flower arranging will be given by Dr. Takako Michii, and music will be provided by cellist Dr. Jonathan Golove, composer and associate professor at UB. Tea and Japanese sweets will be served at the conclusion.
