On Saturday, February 25, 8 p.m.-2 a.m., the Hotel Lenox will come alive as Squeaky Wheel presents its first annual Peepshow.
There will be 17 artist installations in the 8th floor hotel rooms, as well as film and video screenings in the downstairs banquet room. There will be live music in the downstairs lobby by David Kane, Van Tayloris Taylor Made Jazz, and the Paul Kozlowski Trio, as well as cool sounds from area DJs on the lower level. This rich array of visual and auditory entertainment includes an exciting silent auction of works from area artists and love-themed gift baskets, as well as a cash bar and other refreshments.
Attendees will discover that hotel rooms make great locations for art as they view installations by artists such as (just to name a few): -Michele Beck and Jorge Calvo from New York City, who will explore issues of intimacy and boundaries in a performance involving one man, one woman, one suitcase, one monitor, and a pair of scissors. -Sean Hyoung Kim, whose Romance of Red Umbrella explores female symbols and myths with the use of video projection, water, and red umbrellas. -Toronto-based artist Warren Quigley, whose installation (entitled Love Motel) references motels from various cultures and times, featuring a heart-shaped red telephone with a looping soundtrack.
Films and videos will be screened in the hotelis lower level, and will alternate with performances by the Stripteasers and sounds from area DJs. The silent auction features works by artists Jackie Felix, Gerald Mead, Edward Bisone, Barbara Rowe, and many others. Sexy floral decorations are provided by Martin Kemp Designs; the Peepshow poster was designed by Anya Lownie.
All proceeds from Peepshow will benefit Squeaky Wheel. As Buffalois only media arts center, Squeaky Wheel provides affordable access to media production equipment, regular screenings and in-person presentations of independent media artists and documentary filmmakers, low cost workshops in film, video and digital art, youth media education and after-school programs, and artist residencies and other resources for independent filmmakers.
